Need PCI-(E) vid card suggestions

I want something that'll work in my new mobo Chaintech VNF4 (PCI-E and PCI only). So I'm looking for a cheap (~$50-70 or less) that will be around the speed of a Geforce 3 or so. Any suggestions? The cheaper the better, I rather go cheap than get a good performer!

Radeon X300SE. Cheap ($50-60) and worse than a gF3.

Now that I've answered that - what the god damned hell are you doing buying an nForce4 presumably S939 board, and bitching out on the graphics for?

LOL! I knew someone would ask that. Well, the computer is basically my work/home computer that I use to do a lot of computational things. I've got a X800 XL preordered and that'll go in as soon as these guys become available. Until then, I want to be able to use my computer and do my work, and I'll worry about playing games later when I have the X800 XL and the luxury to do so.

Normal PCI solutions would work too. I don't HAVE to have PCI-E. I looked into the 6200 with Turbocache, that's very appealing to me especially since I have 1 gig of OCZ's 3700 Plat (TCCD but higher speed bin than 3200 Plat Rev 2).

If you don't mind having a PCI GPU, then Newegg and other etailers still have some older generation cards for around $40. I thought you strictly wanted a PCIe card.

No, not at all. I just want something that will be roughly the speed of a GF3. I just want to be able to use the computer while I'm waiting for my preorder X800 XL. So it doesn't matter so much what the card is as long as it's not ridiculously slow.

Well, this is a 64MB PCI GeForce4 MX440 card for about $52 bucks. Hardly state of the art, but what do you expect for $50 bucks?

Next up you could consider a 128MB PCI-E GeForce 6200 for about $70 bucks... much more powerful, but $20 bucks more.

Not much else to suggest while giving decent horsepower and keeping overhead costs to a minimum.

I definitely am expecting a long wait, but no more than 2-3 months or I'll cancel. Hence, why I want a non-crappy card for now then wait until I get my X800 XL. Do you guys think it might be worth it to just buy something decent like X600/700 or 6600 then sell it instead? I'm basically just trying to figure out what will allow me to retain the most money once I get to using my X800 XL. Thanks.

It really boils down to how much gaming you are going to want to do between now and your new high-end card and how much you are willing to spend.

I suppose it also matters as to WHICH games you intend on playing between now and then. If you're going to play Solitare and Quake 2, something like a PCI GeForce4 MX440 will do just fine... but if you want to play a lot of HL2 and Doom3, I would consider AT LEAST a GeForce 6200 so you can play those games (with a lot of stuff turned down of course).

If you're willing to buy now, sell later, then it depends on your budget, and once again... how much you are willing to spend.

Well, to be honest, I don't play games much at all, maybe once a in a while hence why I don't mind not having something too good. I don't own HL2 or Doom3, and the last game I bought was Battlefield Vietnam which I can't play due to having a 6 year old computer. I want something that could at least play Battlefield Vietnam and some of the other older games I used to play.

Then for you, I would recomend one of the two choices I listed depending on your budget. A PCI GeForce4 440MX for $50 bucks or a PCI-E GeForce 6200(TC) for $70. Once again, it depends on how much you're willing to part with, the better value is the GeForce 6200... but either should do fine for what you describe.

Sounds good, thanks for everyone's advice. I'll probably check out the local CircuitCity and then decide. Since I'd optimally like to get something running by the end of the week.

Last time I looked, Newegg had a 5700LE PCI card also.
Quite right... they do... AT $89 BUCKS!

Frankly, he'd be much better off with a $70 PCI-E GeForce 6200!

It'd be nice if he could find a PCI GeForceFX for $50 bucks, but they seem to tack-on cost if it's in the PCI format, so I think the best he'll do for a low-cost PCI card will be the one I listed, the GeForce4 MX440 at $50 bucks.

If "cheap as you can be" is the concern and still get half-decent performance, I think the $50 buck GeForce4 MX440 is the way to go... but if he can shell out an additional $20 bucks, the PCI-E 6200 is much better. All depends on the budget!

I am in the exact (same mobo, x800 xl preorder, etc.) situation as the OP. I picked up a pci-e 64mb x300 off of ebay for $35 shipped. Its a tiny, passivley cooled card and yes, the performance isn't great, but it will do the trick for now.

I get about 8000 points in 3dmark2k1 on my system (a64 3000, 1gb ddr400, nothing overclocked as yet), which isn't horrible. You could probably play most games out there at a lower resolution and detail setting. In fact, I will probably load UT2004 in the next few days.

I'm not expecting much eye candy, but it will tide me over until that x800xl shows up (hopefully sooner rather than later)...
