I'm making the switch from WinMe to 2000pro. I've got a 30gb maxtor 7200rpm with a 3gb primary partition (OS) and the rest for apps and data. I've also got a 13.5gb 5400rpm drive thats clean. I'm using a promise ultra66 controller for both drives. If I do a clean install, what would be the best configuration as far as partitioning and formatting (NTFS or FAT32)? Also, when I format the drives, will the 2000 boot disk see the controller? Can I format the OS drive as NTFS and data drive as FAT32, or should I even consider this? What about a seperate partition for the swap file? I'm running a celeron850 and 256mb pc133.

Thanks much

The Win2000 boot disk will see a Promise Ultra66 controller. If you have the Ultra100 you need the driver disk for installation. If you are doing only Win2k on your computer I would go with NTFS, it is more secure.

I would stick with FAT32 because you can read those drive from a DOS boot disk, if it ever becomes necessary. NTFS partitions can be accessed using the www.sysinternals.com NTFSDOS util, but thats a pain.

For best performance, put your swap file on the second hard drive.
