So I have a friend that wants me to upgrade his system and we talked about P4.

Socket 423 or 478 ?

What is the current best chipset ?

DDR or Rambus ? (Me thinks DDR)

Or maybe for the price, I should just build him a AMD 2100+ w/KT333 motherboard and DDR.

Thx for the help guys :)

im also an amd guy at heart...

but if he really wants a P4
for best performance use rambus.. but ddr is pretty close second
also definatly go with socket478
intel chipsets tend to be the best for intel cpu's (but to be honest the new sis chipset is very nice :) )

personally i would go with a kt333 and an xp2100+ (i love the epox 8k3a+ motherboard)

Here is some info for you:

Get a 478 Chip and make sure that it is Northwood (0.13 micron w/ 512k L2 cache) They come in two versions too...."A" = 400 MHz FSB, "B" = 533 Mhz FSB
if you are going to get the "A", get the 1.60A, they are known for overclocking. 1.80A comes second. For "B" get the 2.26B....its just like the 1.60A but little better

Go with DDR now....Intel is phasing out Rambus. DDR 333 would be a recommended choice although it is not officially supported by intel right now but it will be supported soon enough.

regarding the Chipsets, get a board with Intel I845G chipset (most famous right now, it also supports DDR 333 via board manufacturers). SIS 648 chipsets are the newer chipsets from SIS...dont know about them. Intel chipsets are the best and known for stability....cant comment on SIS here.

hope that helps you a bit.

thanks
