Right now my computer is running a 1.8ghz AMD 3000+ processor with 1GB of ram and integrated graphics (I know I'm poor). I sold my last PCI-E card, a 7900GT because I needed the money and when I had some again I ended up getting an Xbox 360. I'm thinking of getting back into the PC realm basically to play BF2 and FEAR and the like. I was looking at upgrading my CPU to a AMD 3700+ and buying a 7900 GS. The total before rebate would be $280 but with the rebate and reselling my old CPU I think the total cost would be about $240. Am I better off spending the money on just a PCI-E card? is my CPU that much of a bottleneck? What prices will go down more in the long run, 7900s or AMD 64-bit processors?

If your 3000+ is athlon 64, then try overclocking it to 2.4ghz, should be enough. If your mobo doesn't support overclocking buy a new one for $40-50

If you are going to upgrade, at least go Dual Core, I don't think the Athlon X2 are too price right now...

BF2 and FEAR both run better on ATi's hardware. A64 3000+ is still a decent processor. I would try overclocking first to about 2.4ghz and then get X1900XT 256mb for $220. If you plan on selling the processor, might as well upgrade to dual core and overclock as getting another single core (even if it is 3700+) is a waste imo.
