need opinions/reviews on brands

I was looking for notebooks on pricegrabber.com... and I came across some brands I am not really familiar with.. anyone has any opinions/reviews/experience with brands such as Acer , Averatec and eMachines?....

What caught my eye is that some of the them have notebooks with some specs for about $900.
When I look for the same specs on brands such as HP, the price difference is over $200..

Comments welcomed

I'm not too fond of the Acers or the emachines laptops. However...some of the Averatecs are actually quite nice. I ordered a Turion64 one for a customer that was small and portable and had DVDRW, 80GB, 512MB...it was quite light and the display on it was very nice.

Now...I'm not sure how their warranty support is but I would purchase an extended warranty to get a total of 3 years if I bought any laptop.

Its actually for my brother, I am taking it to him over the holidays. He is in South America, so I guess warranty doesnt matter that much... I REALLY doubt there are Acer/Averatec/Emachines representatives in Ecuador, SA.

He is in college, so he doesnt anything too high tech. He wants something portable. Price range is about $800, but for some of this models (acer specially) seem to be worth putting $100 more and getting a better processor, ram, or a better drive(dvd-r), etc.

One of my concerns is that the specs will appear nice and all, but the computer will look and feel like a cheap piece of plastic. I have a HP ($1250), and other than getting a little too hot, its a good machine.

I would avoid eMachines laptops. Having hinges snap is pretty lousy. Gateway laptops are more or less identical, seeing as how eMachines and Gateway merged a few years ago.
Acer laptops seem to vary. Their high-end stuff is nice, but the low-end stuff seems to be not so nice.
I've heard mixed reviews of Averatec stuff. Some may be good; some not. It's not too popular, from what I can tell.
I would rather remove one of my kidneys with a dull spoon than deal with Dell tech support again.

I've always had great service from Dell tech support...as long as the system is in-warranty. I've had a couple issues and I had replacement parts the next day, no hassle.

Now...for out of warranty stuff I dunno I've never had to go through that department.

Emachines was voted the worst in customer services a while back. I was unaware they merged with Gateway so that does give them a few more points but not to much more. I wouldn?t buy anything form them for my self so it?s hard for me to recommend them.

Acer seems to make a pretty good product. I've never used one for more then a few minutes at a time so my opinion probably shouldn?t count. If I were still looking for my self I would not rule them out though.

Averatec is a brand I've seen around quite a bit but have never actually used one of their notebooks. From what I've heard they make a decent product but they typically compete in the budget range of notebooks so I wouldn?t expect the quality to be stellar. This is not all bad though. If you don't want to spend a ton of money and are careful with your notebook you may not need to pay for IBM quality and workmanship (As long as Averatec?s quality is not sub-par that is).

EDIT:
As I have stated before I work with a crap load of Dell's and I do not find their tech support to be any worse then anyone else's. I haven?t been impressed with HPs support for my DV4000 though.

I would get an HP dv1000 if you can find one in that price range.

Averatec's are cheap and are so for a reason. Build quality is bottom of the line, but it is sufficient and features are good for the money.

I've not used low end Acer's, but they seem to be mediocre in value overall.

Lenovo sells Thinkpad R-series models in that price range, and those will have better build quality than any of these notebooks here; but offer less features for the money.
