Okay bare with me here for a while since I'm an old guy (in computer terms) trying to re-aquire the new knowledge of todays computers. I also realize that this has some CPU and Memory topics, but I'm really concerned about my MB selection.
Okay first off I need to upgrade my system because I bought a new 80 gig Western Digital hard drive and couldn't use it on my older system. The BIOS could only recognize up to 38 gig's of it. I tried looking for a BIOS upgrade, but the company that made my MB, is no longer in the market and has no new BIOS updates. That leaves me only one alternative. Getting a new system and I have already choosen the P4 1.6A as a CPU replacement.
Well, first off, I want to try this OC phenomina with an ASUS board. But only to find out that there are many versions of the ASUS P4B and P4B266 bards. Which one do I get. must have USB 2.0 but do not care about things like on-board video and sound. I want a Mercedes with no options because I can get better things with for it later and I always like getting my own stuff to suit my needs.
My question is, is there any difference in the OC ability of these boards? Is the OC anility basically the same except for the options that the boards come with (i.e. on-board sounds, video, LAN, etc.)? If I want the OC ability but not the extra options, which board is for me? And having said that, the least option MB should be the least expensive too correct?
Now on to the memory. If I recall corectly on ASUS's website, they said that the P4B series MB's accept DDR 2100/1600 memory chips but I find that most of you are using 2700 or maybe even more. Is that necessary? Does it even give any performance difference? Or is it just an insurance policy for the OC'ed CPU and MB so its stable? Is it required to run an OC'ed CPU to 2+ gig's?
Now as for brands of memory, just as long as they are name brand ones, then it should be fine correct? What should I use for memory as a baseline speed, DDR 2100 or more?
Any information is welcomes and I hope I get a lot of feedback because I hope to get this system right and keep it for some time.
Thanks!
