Yah yah another new build thread.
So whats the swwetspot nowadays for CPU/mobo/chipsets? My current build is a Conroe e6600 and an Abit AB9 Pro mobo. Terrible mobo, because I want to dual boot linux, and the P65 chipset doesnt play well with it (pretty well documented). Primary usage is the usual gaming, audio/vidio rip/conversion. As a side note I use my box as an HTPC kinda...its near my living room and I have it connected to my receiver/55" LCD tv now. I stream alot of music and movies out of it. Im currently using an MSI GTX 260 vid card, 4 megs memory, and Windows 7 32 bit.
My budget is around $800. I was at Frys yesterday and they have an i7 930 with an MSI X58 E Pro mobo combo for $349 after $20 rebate. Retail for them both is $480 os so, so it seems like a decent deal. I was also looking at a 60GB SSD drive. Currently, with all programs I usually use installed, Im at about a 28 gig install so it should be fine. Im on the fence with the vid card, although its a good card and should be fine. It looks like 4 gigs of memory will run me about $120 or so.
So what do you all think? I was also looking at the i5, but, honestly, I can afford an i7, and the bennies frankly look worth it for me. I know nothing is "future proof", but I tend to rebuild every 3-4 years or so.
