Will this backpack fit as carry-on? Was planning on keeping it by my feet. Holds my camera and lenses, as well as a 15" laptop I was planning on playing on during my 4-5 hr flight to Hawaii.

It will definitely fit in the overhead bin. I frequently travel with a backpack and have always used the bins with no issue, domestic and international.

Overhead bin always in case you want foot room. Once underway, you can pull it down but that gap will be there if you need to put it back up to be comfy. Claim that space!

If you get a carry-on AND personal item, add a laptop bag or string backpack to keep at your feet. Unless you fly the crappy airlines, those 2 bags cost nothing whereas a checked bag might.

Length/width look OK, but it's too packed so height looks too big to fit under the seat, but maybe you can squish it down. These are what seem to be the general dimensions for carry-on luggage:

  • (1) personal (under seat)
    • Up to 18x14x8”
  • (1) bag (overhead bin)
    • Up to 22x14x9”

I carry a backpack with my 17" laptop and I've never had a single issue. They'd have to pry it from my cold dead hands if they even mentioned me having to gate check it.

I think we're flying Hawaiian Air, not sure if they allow personal and carry-on but I'll check that out. I seemed to remember the overhead bins not being that big when we flew to Cabo last year which is why I was thinking of putting it by my feet, but yea, maybe I'll just put it above and take out the laptop as needed. I just realized I probably won't have room to use a mouse though so it might all be moot anyways.

Just watch out when the last person on the plane decides to use your bin and smashes their luggage into your backpack so it fits.

not sure how the size of my camera bag compares to yours, but it fits under seat on most plane's i've been on. I tend to have more issues with the over head bins being smaller on some planes. Foot room hasn't been much of an issue for me when under the seat. i keep one dslr and 3 lenses in the bag along with some cleaning stuff and a couple of other gadgets for gps and memory cards. Never been to Hawaii so i'm not sure what kind of plane typically gets used. Given the distance and guessed passenger turnover, i would doubt it would be a twin turbo prop.

this is mine

Was planning on keeping it by my feet.

I don't see that working out. It appears much too large to fit under the seat in front of you, which means when the flight starts it will have to be in the overhead bin.

Even if you get it down after take off, it would take up most of the space directly in front of your seat, which would probably require that your legs/feet straddle the backpack. I hope you have friends/family sitting on either side of you because I can't see other passengers liking that situation. You would likely be encroaching on their space.

Of course if you are in an isle seat in an emergency row you might be able to make it work.

It would probably be best if you move some of what is in the backpack to a "personal" item that would fit under the front seat.

Most airline have a measurement for carry on if you call them. Also right before you check in they have a basket where you put your bag in just to be sure it is within limit as a carryon. You probably know about the basket.
