Need opinions choosing TV.

Hey guys, I've been looking into buying a new TV after selling my NIB panny 65" s64 (very upset) for a used car back in the summer. I have been looking for st/vt60, f8500, pioneer elite and the only led I'd buy, sharp elite. I couldn't care less about 4k since you need to be 5' or closer to notice and nobody sits that close unless it a computer monitor. Plus there's barley any 4k content to begin with.

Anyway, I wasn't originally looking into kuros but I've recently found a pro 141fd 60" locally for $1500. So my top 2 choices right now are

1.)Pioneer elite pro 141fd 60" ($1500 locally) suppose to be "lightly used". Guy was not sure about the hours on it.

2.)Sharp elite 60" ($2200 locally) Also lightly used in good condition.

I tried getting the guy to drop the price for the elite, but he won't. Out of these 2, what would you guys choose and why? I didn't put any pannys or the f8500 into the mix because I haven't found any good prices on eBay. But if anyone thinks I should go panny st/vt60 or f8500 over the other 2 choices, let me know. Uses are mostly movies with little gaming.

PS...I've also found a panny 50" s64 locally for only $400 in great condition. Been debating on weather to buy this and just weight for OLED down the road.

All opinions are welcome thanks guys.

I know thats a good display, but its a downgrade to the s64 I sold and the pentile array really turns me off. I would buy new, but unfortunately the best TVs are all discontinued (which is pretty sad)

Actually the black levels on that thing rock. Like F8500 levels. Might be better than my ST60. Plus I think the pentile thing is overblown. My friend has the pentile F5300 and I can barely tell when I get too close. The only major issue with that model is a lack of anti-reflective coating.

I agree, it is sad that plasma is dead. That is why I bought a ST50 then turned around the next year and bought a ST60. Hoarding them until OLED is cheap.

Yea, I heard that the H5000 had great black levels, but the no filter kills it for me. My mom has the 2012 U50 While it looks great at night, it looks pretty crap during the day. Its like a mirror with no filter. If I was watching in a completely dark room all the time, I'd consider it though. There's been some awesome deals on it the past 2 weeks for $899, which is crazy for a 64" plasma of that level.

Hmmm.. well needing a good filter basically means you need to find some way to hunt down a ZT or a F8500. My ST60 is still quite the mirror and it is supposed to have a pretty decent filter.

you can check the hours on the pioneer - do that and then decide. I think 1500 is too much though. I have two of those displays (one being a 600m, but same panel) and I only paid like 3000 new for the last one. considering it is a 6 yr old or older display, I would shoot for 1000 bucks.

I think 2200 for the LCD elite is a lot as well. I know it's a good display, but too much dough for a used display

if that doesn't pan out, I would go a completely different route.

I'd pick up a 60" LG plasma that I have seen for under 600 bucks (check slickdeals) at microcenter and a few other places. I'd save the extra money and put it towards a big OLED display in 2 yrs.

OK, I'll check the hours on the pioneer. Do you know how? I'll try to get him down to $1000 if I go take a look at it. How many hours would have to be on it to be worth $1500 in your opinion?

The sharp elite I've always wanted, but I agree that $2200 is overpriced. I've seen one on amazon last year go for $1800 in very good condition (I saw pics). It was a floor model from some random small video store. I've tried to get the guy to drop the $2200 price but he won't and just explains how its the best TV and brings up the retail price from 2011. There's a reason he hasn't sold it and its been on eBay for 6 to 8 months now. I've also seen a 70" elite on ebay in very good condition which I would really love but its $3500. Its costing the guy $1000 to ship it. If it was local I could probably grab it for $2500 which would be a steal imo. Any ideas to get cheaper shipping?

The lg sounds good, but the black levels usually suck bad. <$600 is a good deal though, but I'd probably go the H5000 route if those were my 2 choices. What's your thoughts on the 50" s64 for $400? It has about 1500 hours on it. I could buy that and just wait for OLED...

That is a good price for the s64. Look for burn in on a white screen though, it can happen even on the very last Panasonics.

Will do. I have D-nice slides on a thumb drive I can use. Just sold my Samsung 27" VA monitor on eBay for $300 so I'm 3/4 there already. 50" must be pushing it for using on a desk like a monitor right?

the lower hours the better. I'd like to see it sub 1000 hours, but you make the call on what you think is acceptable

my thoughts on the S64... it's fine, but you could buy the lg for comparable money and have a 60" display brand new out of box. the black levels won't 'suck' they won't be the best, but it's a stop gap display for you and is cheap.

I am not a fan of sammy displays. the only problems I have personally heard of are with sammy displays. you hear about issues online with all manufacturers, but first hand experience I see sammy displays having the most issues. personally I wouldn't buy one.

If I 'had' to buy a TV now, it would be a cheap one, and good enough to bridge the gap till I could get a 70"+ OLED

Honestly I have less issues with my Samsung plasma than my two Panasonics. Samsungs won't burn in, never have handshake issues (which I fight all the time on the ST), and has the discrete remote codes something like a Harmony wants.

When that big 64 inch Samsung is gone we won't touch picture quality near that price point for five plus years.

LG's haven't improved their plasma tech since 2012. Seriously a ST30 is better. I wouldn't put a dime into a LG set when you can still buy a Samsung new.

LG has an OLED on the market now that is better. we will see more come this year and next that will easily beat the sammy. the only issue is size. the LG is a 'only' 55".

I'm confident that within 2 yrs we will see 70" or larger OLED for relatively affordable prices. That will be the point I upgrade my pioneer

I'd say 1000 hrs is REALLY low. I have 18,000 hrs on my 141 and it is solid. Hell, anything under 5000 hrs for $1500 isn't bad. I'd recommend going with a nice new LG OLED though.

Went to best buy today to see if the floor model 64" F8500 was still available. Was offered $1400 about a month ago but turned it down. It has around 6,500 hours on it, clear IR besides a faint ESPN logo in bottom corner. So I was surprised to see it still there today and hoped to negotiate the price for less than $1400 only to find out the manager can only go down to $1600 now. He said it was on sale when he offered me $1400. He said the "system" would only allow him to go down to $1600. So needless to say I was pretty disappointed. Oh well. Hopefully the price goes down before its sold.

Personally, there's no way I'd pay 1500 for a 6 year old TV of any kind. Hours aren't the only thing that matters. Things age just sitting there, and there's still going to be 6 years' worth of hot/cold cycles on it, even if it didn't stay on as long in the middle of them.

OP, why not find a used Panny? I see plenty of ST/VT or even GT models (still quite good) in the used market, for quite good prices.

Otherwise IMO if I had to buy, a used Kuro for a good price (don't pay over $1000 for one, it's still an old TV with no warranty), or just bite the bullet and go OLED. If you have the money, it's not like you will regret it.

Thanks for your suggestions. I just double checked eBay and couldn't find any 2013 st/vt for good prices. There were a couple decent prices but only local pickups that weren't near me. I'm only interested in 2013 models. The 50" s64 for $400 I found locally seems to be my best bet until OLED.

I would regret OLED right now because its curved, which I hate. and its $3500 for only a 55" inch. I think in a few years we'll be able to buy 60"+ flat OLEDs for $3500. I can wait.
