Need opinions/advice: 750MHz or 1.2GHz?

For those of you that don't know, I'm working on building a system for a file server. I'm able to build a 750MHz Duron System /w 128MB RAM for about $340 total (includes the other stuff). I know this is overkill, but I couldn't find anything cheaper, plus, I can play around with it do some other things, like web-hosting and stuff like that.

The question is, my current system is very similar. 733MHz /w 384MB RAM so it seems kind of a waste. Should I simply convert my current system into a file server and build a new 1.2 GHz system? It'll only cost me an extra $200-$300. (Better power supply, HSF, 512MB DDR SDRAM)

Since it costs about the same to build a new one than to upgrade it I would go with building the new. The Duron for a file server seems okay but I would get more memory.

Yeah... I was thinking the same. Plus I know my current system is compatible with Linux which I can't say the same about the KM133 chipset.

However, $300 is still extra I gotta pay.🙁 But I guess I can think of it as getting a 1.2GHz system for $300 since I'm already set on buying parts for my file server.

you could OC your 1.2 to 1.4 then you'd be at almost twice your current speed.
I justify my upgrades that way all the time 🙂

Seems like a unanimous decision! Plus, it's always more exciting to build a fast system rather than a 'good enough' system which I usually do for family members. Thanks!🙂
