Need Opinions about DSL

My parents are getting DSL (finally... going from a college LAN to dialup really sucked) and asked me what I thought about this, so I wanted to see what you guys thought about it since im kind of a n00b when it comes to DSL.

Standard Plus Package ($29.95)

384Kbps-1.5Mbps
128Kbps
1 Dynamic

Order SBC Yahoo! DSL for a one-year term for $29.95 per month, and receive a $149 SBC Yahoo! DSL Wireless Home Networking kit, $179 laptop Home Networking bundle or a $99 DSL modem, and receive a $99 Instant Credit (taxes and a $12.95 shipping and handling fee apply). Plus, get free activation and a free self-installation kit.

The download is really all over the board. Can you get something a little more set? If the download speeds are above 1Mbps then that seems reasonable to me.

Speed is line quality dependent hence why they offer such a range and cannot guarantee.

And I'd keep looking as a higher upstream could be of some use to you. I had 600/128 for a while (UK Cable) for £15, but found myself waiting an eternity for uploads so switched to 1024/256 for £25.

And before anyone asks from the UK, im getting a special offer.

Yeah I noticed the range also but wasnt exactly sure how big of an influence that was.

Thanks for the info.

Well, the upstream could be so low that it affects your downloads. Also, don't expect to send much to anyone.

I'm not a network tech, this is just from experience.

I do have SBC/Yahoo at home, it overall I do seem happy with it.............I mean for the montly price, it's the cheapest I've seen for Broadband. I usually get 1.5mbps down and 256 Up. If you use Kazza Lite, the vairables would be much more unstable. I'd go with it.

Thanks for the info everybody... Yeah i realized it was the wrong forum after I posted it, but what can ya do? 😛

 for all!

Look into Verizon DSL, its like $30 a month, i'm using it, and its pretty darn fast, my average ping in a game of Enemy Territory, or HALO is somewhere around 60-100, which is fantastic.

Yeah I checked Verizon... Unfortunately it wasnt available for our area 🙁

That's not bad. It's basically the same service I get from Earthlink for $52. Like was mentioned earlier, my line quality only allows me to get 928Kbps downstream.
Also look for deals from local ISPs. There's one in my town that offers 256K up and down with a static IP for $34 with no long-term contract. If I had known that I couldn't get over a megabit on my phone line I probably would have gone with that.

Right now i Use Roadrunner cable for 45 bucks a month, it's 3000kbs+ down, and 400kbs+ up Works good, wish it had more upstream power though.

Am also using road runner too and getting the same speed. love road runner!!

youll need a static IP to run a game server
Or a Dynamic IP Address Updater. Several are available free of charge. At least so far as I know this would work. If it works for HTTP and FTP servers I can't imagine it not working for a game server. Not that that was a question here.

At any rate, I have SBC/Yahoo and like it. I do not use their BS software however. I don't need all that crap for a connection.

I got adelphia and its 2mb up 256K down. You could probably do better but it all depends on timing. You probably wont make it past a 1mb per sec dld rate tho. SO its ok just a little more set would be nice.

i tried from no-ip.com but but address updaters do not work because for games you need a ip address not a myserver.no-ip.com
This still was not the question originally asked. But another thought I had is you don't need any extra stuff running. A game server run from my computer is not likely to be a 24/7 server. The IP address from my SBC DSL stays the same until I disconnect and reconnect. I disconnect only in the event my computer needs to be rebooted. My game server would not be running in the event my computer is not (obviously). Therefor, my IP address stays the same all the time. It is easy to find your IP adress and plug it into the game server software when you start the game server. No fuss. No muss. No problem. So I was mistaken in my response, you don't need any IP updater. And you still don't need a static IP adress either.

I have SBc and am very happy with it, if their 3mbit/sec package is available your decently close to the CO or RT, so you should have NP getting the full 1.5mbit/sec on their lesser package. Im happy with SBC because I get 6000/608 for $45 a month.

I don't think Setting up a server at all will work to well 128K is not going to be very fu nfor that and I belive most ISP's do NOT allow servers.
Right now I have Verizon DSL I get 1500k down and ussually ~135k up I never have had downtime with these guys There is also rumors of a speed increase to 3mbit down and 384 up which would be sweet as I am only 302 feet from the CO so I would get the upgrade easy 🙂

DSL is suppose to be more reliable than cable but ussually cable ISP's have highier speeds but they ussually also have download caps so they can turn you off if u go over thier invisable limit 🙁 which you don't know until they say NO MORE.

How did you determine your distance from the CO? I'd be curious to know mine...

It depends on the ISP. Cable is actually more reliabe as a service than DSL. The reason is simple, the bandwidth is/was already there in the cable pipe going to your house before cable companies were allowed to use it. DSL on the otherhand is re-engineered plain old telephone line, which was never intended to carry as much data as we currently push through it. When DSL works, it can be wonderful, but there are a lot more variables to DSL, such as the quality/condition of the phone lines in your area and the distance you are from the cetral office. There is also usually a greater amount of set up time with DSL because your phone line has to be provisioned by your local phone carrier for DSL.

My advice, check out http://www.dslreports.com/, and even better, find people in your area (neighborhood) that have different types of broadband and ask them about their experiences. Experiences with the same provider can vary a great deal from location to location.

hmmm I'm also using verizon dsl, the 135k upload is REALLY bugging me because share a lot of stuff off my ftp server. I checked verizon's site for any upgrade, and they don't seem to give any speed information. When did you hear they will upgrade to 3/384? It seems like they should upgrade, as all the competitors in my area offers that speed for the same price I'm paying now.
