i just finished building my first computer my build is

i7-960 3.2ghz
6gb ram @1600mhz
wd 1tb hdd caviar black
intel extreme dx58so mobo
22" samsung monitor @1920x1080

I'm currently using just an old gt220 (ran outta cash before i got a videocard). I was originally planning on getting a gtx 560ti and I ran across a gtx 460 768mb at BestBuy for $112. But when I went to go get it the sales associate told me about the new 560ti that's coming out on the 29th which should be priced around the same as the older model. Anyway my question is do I get 2 gtx 460s and sli them, or wait on the new gtx 560ti. Sli will out perform obviously but with it being only 768mb wont that hurt it in the future as well as on my 1080p monitor

Any advice is appreciated
 
If you want to play "modern" games do not get 768mb cards. For 1080p the new (or for that matter the existing) 560TI will be enough for high/ultra depending on the game.
 
Im running SLI GTX460s (1GB, the 768s are dogs), and by all the benches i have seen they perform on par with a single GTX580. Not bad given that i paid about $300 for both. That being said my mobo is not ideal (EX58-UD4P) for SLI, the top card has no room for exhaust and as a result it runs about 15-20C higher than the lower card (but never above 80). I would make sure your setup is not the same, and that your PSU has enough outputs for two 460s.

I've also heard the same about SLI GTX460s running on par with the 580's.
But I didn't know the 768MB versions still existed, to be quite frank.
If you are going to pick the 460's make sure to pick up the 1GB versions and not the 768's.

I have GTX460's (not sli) myself and they've been doing hell a lot of damage in gaming for me 🙂 (damage in a good sense)

two 460s will blow away a 560ti. The 560ti is only a bump up from the 460. I believe its 20% (a little more) higher than the 460. If i am wrong someone correct me on this.

But you must be consider the multiGPU world has its drawbacks. Its amassing at times but some ppl cant stand the microstudder and other issues that may pop up from time to time.

But for 160$, its a freakn steal. GET THEM. You cannot go wrong! If you decide for something else later, your investment will still hold value.

You don't sli 768mb cards @ 1080p. Last year mabe but 1gb of memory is now the standard.

Wait for the gtx560ti 448 core benchmarks when overclocked.
I can easily say it will be as fast or faster than a gtx570.

When 2 768mb cards run out of memory the gtx560ti 448 with 1.25gbs will destroy it.

If the gtx460's were 1gb, it would be a different story.
