Hi, am building a budget system on GA-P35-DS3L rev2.0 mobo. want to add a decent inexpensive graphic card to it. system not intended for high-end gaming. wondering if $40 for a used 256MB Nvidia GeForce 6800XT PCI Express 16 - EVGA is worth it.

I think you could get better even for 40 bucks, the 6800xt is essentially a 6600GT, which i'm actually running right now. On the for sale forums some people sell old 7900gs's for like 75 and x850's for like 60 bucks; they'd at least allow you to play games of the Doom 3 and FEAR era easily... which can't really be done on a 6600gt on anything but lowww.

edit:: well I guess i suggested two cards that are 50% more expensive so yeah if all you got is 40 bucks then I guess thats the best.

taltamir, thanks for linking the charts. I now get an idea of the performance hierarchy. I think I can definitely do better than 6800XT for $40. I found a couple of 7600 and 7900 going for 60+ and going to try see if I can get any around $50. appreciate the information shared here.

Actually, the 6800gt you linked has 2x the pixel shaders and vertex processors as the 6800XT he's considering.

noted that but sorry didn't point it out. there's the 6600GT on there if it can be considered close to 6800XT as per Insomniator's post.

yea, the XT wasn't there but illuminator said they are practically the same... kind of like the ATI HD 2900 pro and the XT...
