Hello fellow techies,

I humbly come to you, to ask your opinion on a vid card upgrade.

my current rig:
Asrock Extreme 4, z77
i5-3570k, slightly OC'ed
8gb of g.skill 1600
256 gig samsung ssd
GTS 250 (good ol' card, really shined moving up to this from the AMD 64 4200+ i had it in :3 but time to put the ol' girl to rest)
750w PSU
resolution 1920x1080, would like higher res...eventually

...to name the important parts.

I had a budget up to 500, I'd like to hover at the ~400 range though.

I'd like to stay away from Powercolor, i mention so, because it's in the mid-range build.

My current lead pick is:
Gigabyte GV-R797OC-3GD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125413

followed closely by:
Sapphire 100351SR http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814202008 only $20 more, and both are >$400 AR

There's also the Gigabyte GV-R797TO-3GD under concideration.

My other thoughts: I hear a new line of video cards is out soon? or will that be closer to Winter season? Worth the wait if I don't mind waiting? Any other suggestions for cards? (would love a 7990, or titan, or something along those lines....but *sigh* I should probably, you know...buy a car first :/ )

Also, not quite the right spot, but if someone wouldn't mind answering...

The Haswell products, upgrade early, or wait and modernize after DDR4 becomes standard? (haven't had this build even a year yet as it is) figure I'll wait anyways, invest in my water-cooling so I can tinker with OC'ing more :D

Might be worth waiting to see what the 780 and 770 are actually like.

Apparently the Haswell memory controller allows some pretty insane speeds on DDR3, so maybe not having DDR4 isn't a biggie.

The firepower of a 7950 3gb comes quite close to a 7970 for almost $100 less new.

I would also recommend waiting two weeks. Sometimes pulling the trigger before a new product announcement can be regrettable. Even if you aren't considering the new chips, other prices can move in relation.

So we're just a couple weeks out of an announcement on the 780's and 770's? what about the 8xxx series? I don't mind waiting at all, if it means more power for same, or same for cheaper. :)

Thank you all for the answers and advice. I just found wand3r3r's thread about the new lineup, i know, bit late to that party, but gonna keep my eyes peeled to that thread for more info.

But looks like with the lineup dropping in May, I'll definitely wait for benchmarks, then, if they are $400-$600 range, I'll be able to go straight to the 780 if I so desire.

Thanks again! <3 this forum.
