E6850 @ 3.6GHz
8800 GTS 320MB
4GB OCZ 1066 ram
CoolerMaster Centurion 534 case
Antec TruPower 650W

So i've been reading these forums for a few weeks now, getting the upgrade itch again (just put in 4GB of ram from 2GB). I'm trying to hold out for Fermi to release to push down prices but it looks like it's going to be a limited launch and won't have a real affect until May. In addition I'm picking up Bad Company 2 today..

Now I've always been an NV user, I always liked their drivers and their cards, but they haven't put out anything in so long and I'm tired of waiting. I hear horror stories about ATI's drivers but i'm assuming their decent enough since a lot of people have their cards :)

As the title suggests, my LCD is 1680x resolution, given my CPU and resolution, I was thinking of the follow options. I would try to find one used, i would want to stay around $150-200 range. the lower the better obviously.

GTX 275 - 10.5" long could be issue with my case
ATI 4890 - 9-9.5" long, seems slightly slower than GTX 275, http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3750&p=4

Am a big fan of 4890 cause it's still very well rounded. But both video cards use a lot more power than say a 5770.

If you can find a cheap 4890 then go with it. New then go 5770 get the overclock version it will be only like 5 to 7 percent slower than a 4890.

NV side I think it's hard to find 275's for a decent price so there probably no real choices on the NV side.

Asus 5770 voltage tweak edition for 160$ shipped at newegg.
Thats the perfect card for you (1650x1050) and best bang for the buck right now.

These cards are know to overclock to 1000 core 1400 memory. (=4890)

Yup. Seems a perfect upgrade for your card, and will OC nice. I think in a couple years you'd rather have this than the 4890, because it will only be a tad slower but will use a ton less power consumption (even OC'd) and has DX11.

thanks for the suggestions, i've been looking over that 5770 but it's hard to find legitamite reviews. i'll have to look for generic 5770 ones.

Power considerations are good.. however DX11 i'm not too concerned about. if it's like all the other DX's before it, it takes a few generations of cards to run the new features fast enough to be usable.

I'd go 4890, not only is it faster than 5770 but it's also faster than 5830. It will last longer, and if you upgrade your monitor at a later date you will still be ok. 16x10 is the top end for 5770, 4890 is very strong up to 19x12 and can even get by at 25x16 in most titles.

This card is nice, I may crossfire it with my 5750.

Remember 4890 is a dead end card. You can't crossfire with anything other then another 4890 in the future. 5770 will hold it's value better also. Not worth the 10% increase in performance.

seems like in the reviews i'm reading, i'm mainly looking at farcry 2 and crysis performance, it seems it's pretty close to the NV GTX 260. I guess it's not getting recommended since it's a DX10 part? But in order to turn on DX11 effects and have good performance wouldn't you need a faster card than the 5770?

Well in all the direct x 11 games I played so far. My 5750 plays just fine at 1600x1200.
The 5770 should be even faster.

JUst played the new BAd Company 2 game at high settings @ 1600x1200 with my 5750.
I'm about 3/4 of the way through it.

Dirt 2 plays fine at high setting also.

Let me know how that card overclocks..Don't forget to up the voltage!
Don't go over 1.35v though.
