I have 2 accounts on T-Mo, one for me and one for my son, on a family plan. Only mine has data as my 16 yr old sone uses a samsung dash and couldn't care less about texting, browsing or any social networking (weird for a 16 yr old) so I usually upgrade my phone once a year, using my 2yr and then his 2yr. I am up this month and want to get rid of my Samsung Vibrant. I loved this phone but it has become very sluggish with the 300+ apps on it so I want a new one. Here is where you guys come in.

I want a phone with at least a 4" screen SMOLED or its closest equal. Dual-core as I have been using my Asus Transformer and can feel the difference. It needs to be able to play Netflix OOTB without any rooting. I don't care if I can't unlock or root as I never felt the need to do this. Does T-Mo have a phone like this?

Thanks.

No, they don't have any phones yet that match all your criteria.

HD7 has a 4.3 inch LCD and comes with Netflix. It's only single-core though, and it's Windows Phone. I love mine, it's worth checking out if you're curious.

There's the HTC Sensation. I'm not sure what the release date is, but it's dual-core and has a 4.3 inch qHD LCD screen. I'm pretty sure it supports Netflix because it's running a Snapdragon CPU.

Then there's the Optimus 2X. It has a 4 inch LCD screen and a Tegra 2 processor. They're out of stock at the moment. Not sure about Netflix.

Honestly, the only phone that will meet all your criteria will probably be the Galaxy S II.

The HTC Sensation looks great but is anemic on the internal 1gb storage. Is that it for the apps? Thats kinda weak. Looks compelling tho.

Rooting and applying a Voodoo kernel might really help with the I/O bottlenecks you're getting with so many apps installed.

This. My Vibrant is very competitive with other phones in day-to-day usage, but I'm upgrading to an HTC Sensation because I want a faster CPU/GPU for gaming.

SAMOLED is only available on Samsung phones. Maybe you should wait for the Samsung Hercules?

Edit: 300 apps? Holy fucking shit...

Is there a particular rom/kernel that would get Netfilx working on a gen 1 Vibrant?

Any Gingerbread ROM enables Netflix on a Galaxy S series. CM7 is the easiest to install (I *believe* you can now flash it straight from Rom Manager), but may be a bit of an adjustment if you're on stock Samsung. Simply Honey or one of the other i9000-based Gingerbreads will also do the job, but you have to flash Samsung Gingerbread bootloaders first (either in some big Clockwork package that includes them or by Odin separately) which can be sort of tricky.

I think most of these wipe data, so don't forget to root and use Titanium Backup on your user (not system) apps and app data before the full flash.

If you don't need Netflix and just want more speed, just flashing any Voodoo Froyo kernel (Bali, OverStock, etc.) and letting it convert your partitions to ext4 will have a serious effect. Note that CM7 also converts your partitions to ext4 automatically. I believe for i9000 Gingerbread you need Chainfire's ext4 conversion app...

Amazonwireless is usually way cheaper to buy phones through than tmobile, although the selection often differs a bit. (like they sometimes have phones tmobile doesn't have in stock, but usually take longer to get new phones by a week or two)
