Hello,

its finally time to build a new system, upgrading from my old but trusty overclocked A64 and dfi lp4 to something decent:

It's over a year ago when i made a list what i wanted, but now time has passed and i lost track with new developments.

1) I am sure i want a intel core 2 duo with high potential for overclocking

2) what board with an intel core 2 duo ???

3) Is Geforce 8800GTX still "the best" or is something else coming ? (SLI is not interesting for me)

4) What powersupply (wattage) to accompany the cpu and the geforce8800gtx ?

5) what kind of ram (i am latency freak, i always liked OCZ). 2GB for sure since i will use Vista.

6) cooling. What options do i have for Core 2 duo ? (Air cooling is fine). Not too loud! Should be good for moderate to nice overclocks!

Important: I am a overclocker so i need pretty good components and no junk

7) OS:

On my current machine i have another partition with vista 64 bit and played with it shortly after it was RC.

I guess i will probably get Vista 32bit.

How does it look now with compatibility and games and Vista...AFAIK i need vista for DX10, right ? I am looking forward to play Crysis and Alan Wake...so the machine should run that stuff!!

thanks,

Georg.

edit: 8) HD ...say 250GB+ which one ?

1) E6750

3) No reason to get a GTX when the new 8800 GT is cheaper and, if I recall correctly, outperforms the GTX in some cases.

has nvidia something up the sleeve coming out "soon"....like in january ? I mean i dont need the new PC "right now".

Btw. in the MB subforum i saw that the dfi UT is considered the best overclocking board...and i like my current dfi...so i might get this!

edit: 8800GT looking good!! BFG ???? If i can get it here in germany that is.

BFG/XFX/Leadtek Geforce 8800GT EU 260

Motherboard DFI LANPARTY UT P35-T2R EU219

PSU Enermax EG701AX-VE(W)SFMA EU 124 (i have an enermax right now and i like it, so i prolly will go with the same brand again)

CPU E6750 EU 162
Cooler EU 35 <-------------- still have to look into what cooler to get

Anything to add here?

New Nvidia cards come Dec 3rd. These should be higher-end cards compared to the mid-range 8800 GT.

600W Enermax doesn't get very good reviews at the Egg (but I guess take that with a grain of salt). But I would hold off on your PSU decision until your video card decision is final. With an 8800 GT, the Corsair 520W would offer plenty, and may be of higher quality than the Enermax 600w, as well as being a few bucks cheaper. It may also be plenty if you decide to run one of the new video cards, too. These new gpu's use less power than the previous generation.

You have a budget in mind? Considered the Q6600? At $280 for a nice quad core, it's no surprise Intel is selling so many of them. :D

Also, because the Q6600's FSB is lower (1066mhz vs 1333mhz), you don't need expensive memory to get a nice OC.

320GB Seagate for $59...

i will wait for reviews of the new NV cards, defintly.

Regardin quad-core...i know that new games demand and utilize dual-core, but is quad-core really necessary ? How will that be utilized anyway in every day work and with gaming?

Also..budget depends...right now i target approx 1000EU for the whole build which i predicted, thanks god the GT is so cheap.

Regarding the FSB...wouldnt the lower FSB be a performance disadvantage?

(in regards to mem prices...they fell EXTREMELY compared to my last build where i paid $300+ for 1GB of low latency OCZ memory :)

Applicatons that utilize dual core cpu's will utilize quad core cpu's. Crysis will utilize the 4 cores. Is it necessary? No, but it's certainly nice to have. Media encoding and heavy multi-tasking will also utilize the four cores.

The 1066mhz FSB is easier to OC, it is actually a quad pumped 266mhz FSB.
The Q6600 has a multiplier of 9: 266mhz x 9 = 2.4Ghz. To get that, one needs at least 533mhz memory.
The E6750 has a multiplier of 8: 333mhz x 8 = 2.67Ghz. To get that, one needs at least 667mhz memory.

So, to overlcock the E6750, you need faster memory than you would with the Q6600.

These are said to get > 900mhz...
http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2116041&enterthread=y

So, with a Q6600 and this memory at 900mhz, you'd be getting the Q6600 up to roughly 4Ghz (9 x 450mhz).
And with an E6750 and this memory at 900mhz, you'd be getting the E6750 up to roughly 3.6Ghz (8 x 450mhz).

What kind of money are we talking about?

I'm also building a system and have done a lot of research and could potentially help you out.

bamacre, appreciate your input !! it sucks since i was busy with other stuff the last months...now i am catching up again with recent developments.

You totally have a point with the Quad, its not that much more. Higher multi is defintly a plus!!

How important is ram-timing now...compared to A64 where latency is everything. Does memory latency matter here ? So assuming i get a quad...what mem would be most suitable for overclocking ?

Depends on what kind of OC you want to try to get.

At 3.6Ghz (9 x 400mhz) any 800mhz memory should be fine. May want to check out the CPUs and Overclocking forum.

Pretty much makes no noticeable difference in an Intel system now. As bamacre said, get any cheap set of DDR2-800 and you'll be good to overclock.

nice. I will totally go for the Q6600 after what i read and a dfi LP UT, 4GB mem and a 8800GTS once it comes out. This will be a killer rig.....excited :) (wipes tear from eye since i dont think that my current OCed A64@2607 is that bad....i might get $5 or so once i sell all those parts :)

Shooting also for Vista 32Bit and i hope i wont have any big compatibility problems w/ drivers etc...

8800GTS? Why not the 8800GT? It's a better card, runs quieter and overclocks much farther. You shouldn't have any trouble with Vista drivers; most manufacturers have Vista drivers for their latest stuff out now, I managed to get all of mine in x64 digitally-signed form :).
