what would you suggest as a program to check people out. and keep their addresses and stuff on file that sorta thing.

we were going to be using just simple word and excel to keep track. but it'd be nice if they could get a receipt. ( instead of one we make and just type information into word )

also, what system would you suggest if we were to have a small internet cafe? most cafes have some sort of net browsing protections. and system lock capabilities. so they can't go into desktop and mess with system settings.

the comps might be used for gaming as well. so there an option as a "boot screen" so they click a link and it opens doom3. or opens an e-mail app. or IE. ( cafe comps will not be linked to main computers )

You may want to consider using Access instead of excel. It's not that difficult to pick up on and will be better suited to a large number of entries. It will take a bit of work, but you can set up a database for purchases that will automatically bring up prices on games, tell you your stock, and deduct when a person buys a copy. You can also set it up to deliver reports to you that contain certain information, such as a customer's info, the game they purchased, with price, tax and total. I believe you can set it up to add a header and footer to it so you can add the store's contact info and return policy.

Like I said, it would be a bit of work to set up, but in the long run it will be well worth it. Access is basically a much more advanced version of excel that can cross reference different forms of data, it's like having multiple spreadsheets that interact with each other and let you dig up information from one sheet when you access similar information on another sheet.... of course, that's what any database is, really. Much easier to back up, too.
