I plan on using it with either 98 or 2000. I'm on a budget guys and am hoping to but together a gaming system.

Duron 800
Radeon Le
now I need a sound card with good support and drivers for most games. Mostly QuakeIII.

Key is cheap, good drivers and compatibility. I have a crappy aureal vortex right now. Will this work in my games?

Thanks.

In 98 it should work fine, but 2k may be an issue.

Cheap. Guillemont MUSE is about 30 bucks.

If cheap to you is about 70 bucks, DEFINITELY get the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz.

Hey you guys, thanks for the input. I'm going to do a little more research into each card now to see which one will give me sound for the cheapest $$$$.

Man, I should change my user name to Mr. Cheap.

Thanks again for the ideas.

Good soundcards last nearly forever though (well, maybe nforce will change that, we'll see) so there's no reason to cut corners on getting one. It's nice to have an upgradeable one too--I bought my live for $40 a few years back, and a year later I got the livedrive breakout box for $30 from compgeeks.

You should be able to pick up something with a yamaha chip in the $20-$30 range. My local computer shop has a generic yamaha card (can't think of the manufacturer, DSE or something like that) for $18 that I like better than my old soundblaster live value (no additional crap software, just drivers to get the sound to work). The 'Muse' card uses the same chip, just with an added software package that raises the price $10-$15.

Well, I just wanted to thank everyone again who chipped in. I've appreciated each of your post and thoughts. Thanks again.

On a side note, my crappy aureal might just work. Although they are no longer in business, driver support lives on! KGBman was kind enough to point me in the right direction. They have drivers for Win 2k!

Techies ROCK!
