MMO or otherwise, I need a new RPG. I may have to wait for Elder Scrolls IV, which would probably be worth it, but I'm impatient right now.

Not WoW, not EQ2, nothing made by mythic, and not DS2.

The only one I can think of right now is Guildwars, but I'm not 100% on whether I want it or not. The other game I'm waiting for is Hellgate: London.

Bard's Tale. Isn't that re-released recently? Did you already play Neverwinter Nights?

Pick up a PSOne for $20 and Final Fantasy 7-9 for $10-15 each, or a PS2 and add FF X and X-2. That should keep you busy for a couple of hundred hours.

I assume you've played Neverwinter Nights, the 2 expansions, and a bunch of user mods already?

Yes
LOL, hadn't seen that before. It's hilarious when you put the cursor over the guy in the middle's crotch.

I have a PSOne with FF Tactics in it right now :p So that's all been done, need something new, preferably for PC.

Yes, I have NN: Gold. I get bored with D&D based games for some reason. I enjoyed Lionheart although Lionheart took so long to figure out how to make the character I wanted that I got bored with it. Twice.

I see some PS2 suggestions, but I don't see anything in the original post as to whether you have a PS2 already or whether you are planning to get one. If you don't have one yet, you have about 40 RPGS you could be playing, more than you could ever play. I'd recommend a few if that were the case, especially Front Mission 4, Shadow Heart Covenant, and second Disgaea.

For the PC, the new Bard's Tale isn't very good at all. I own it and got bored of it every quickly. There hasn't really been any recent PC RPGs.

I'm also waiting on Hellgate: London, the more I read about it the more I want it.

Well I broke down and got EQ2 afterall. I took into consideration the ridiculous amount of expansions they will put out. Instead of seeing it as an extra expense, I see it as a world growing faster than I can explore it. That makes it long term, which is good if the game is fun. Hard to tell at level 6, but we'll see. Sure beats staring at the screen of someone playing WoW though.

What do you mean "staring at the screen of" ? Did you play WoW too?

Managed to get to level 29 in EQ2, a few of us came from wow, a few directly from eq. What we found is the instances were pretty terrible, none of the original zone zeal and the game lacked an overall sense of difficulty. We all quit.

You heard wrong. :p

Incidentally, Guild Wars and Hellgate: London are hardly RPGs. Both are better classified as Action games with developing characters. Since Hellgate is not out yet, I can only compare it to its namesake, Diablo, which had no role playing at all. Guild Wars has the opportunities for role playing, but given the crowd it attracts, I would not get your hopes up. :(

Oblivion, Dragon Age, and NWN2 look like the next wave of good RPGs. NWN2 is being made by Obsidian though, so I hope their publisher lets them actually complete a game this time around.

Not sure how anybody coming from WoW could say that EQ2 "lacks difficulty". I left WoW for EQ2 out of sheer boredom. I'm only level 21 so far in EQ2 but I'm having a lot more fun than I was in WoW, primarily because WoW was just too easy. Getting ot 60 was so easy and fast that there really was no sense of accomplishment at all :

I liked WoW a lot for a while, but it didn't hold my attention for the long term.

I think I'm the only one that's gotten this one so far.

I can say it easily. Mainly because the appeal of WoW was not difficulty, but with Everquest 1 that was really what made the game so addicting. The rarity of items, the unforgiving nature of encounters, the group requirement. EQ1 and WoW are entirely different beasts and both can be enjoyed. But EQ2 doesn't really fit into the equation, it tries to take the environment of EQ1, ugly it up with plagues and dark Quake1 color palette and give it a WoW spin. Well it doesn't work and many, many people would agree with me there.

Ahh well I guess I disagree with you.... I'm only level 21 in eqII so perhaps as I level up I'll come to agree, but for the time being i'm enjoying EQII far more than I enjoyed WoW. WoW had it's moments, but in the end I was very bored with it... and so far EQII is just so much more immersive, it has so many more facets than WoW had. Trade skills are a little annoying because they require a zillion combines.. and that makes them a bit tedious, but the concept of the EQII tradeskill system is pretty cool IMHO instead of the very very dull system in WoW... then you have the status points, leveling, a quest system that lives up to the name "everquest" as opposed to the joke that was questing in EQ1, guild leveling, etc.. just a lot more different facets. As I said, I may grow tired of all this as I get higher level, that remains to be seen. WoW is definately too easy though... I can say that much because I played very casually and still got to level 60 very fast and became bored...

Blizzard are most definately mmo noobs and continue to prove this. However, I respect their collective ability to provide what is needed to foster a fun and challenging environment...
