The few network cards that I have used over the years have all performed basically the same, so I can't really justify paying 40 for a nic when I can get one with a realtek chipset for 7.95. What are your thoughts on this? Also, is wake on lan a useful function?

WOL - a useful function? It depends on whether you would use it.

I personally don't use WOL - it's handy for remote administration though, but in my own little NW I don't need it. Find that I have good experiences with the Intel Pro 100 cards (82559 based), generally few problems, price OK-ish & so on.

What are you looking for - your "average" 10/100 NIC, something with a bit more tools/diagnostics or more advanced functions (teaming, load balancing) ... etc, etc.

What do you want to do - then recommendations can be given. If you need simply "dumb end user" 10/100 NICs, then I would say go for the 10$ range ... I've not had too many problems with that, though I prefer the higher quality stuff myself :).

I'm gonna use 2 nics and use the comp as a firewall/router. WOL probably isnt necessary, since i'll be in the same room with the thing.

Just a warning, not all NIC's with the Realtek chip are the same. Link

I have a Compaq card which is based on the Intel 82___ something. I like it a lot and consider the extra $25 over the cheapers ones well worth it.

Shmorq, you are the man. That review is exactly what I was looking for. In fact, I'd been checking out the netgear ones, and now I think I've made up my mind. Thanks alot!

Huh? . . . Wha?

Someone say something about Netgear? . . .

Oh, ahem: <clears throat>

Netgear is suck!!

/me goes back into stupor

Please disregard the above post. I have no experience with Netgear cards, but I thought it would be funny. Then again, it's also 11:30 on a Sunday night and I need sleep. ;)

Intel NICs are the way to go if you can get a good deal on them. Check the Hot Deals forum for a deal currently going on with them through CDW.

Before I throw in my opinion, let me back it up with details (as opposed to just spouting off "is suck" comments). Of the NIC cards I've tried: Netgear FA310TX, 3COM 3C905C, Intel Pro 100+ Management Adapter, Linksys LNE100TX (revision C), and a laptop Netgear FA410TX. Home network, running a mix of Win2k, Win98, and RedHat 7.1.

None of them gave me any problems in doing what I wanted to do, and that is transfer files between machines. None of them threw a "please install driver again" or any installation hardships, especially if you know what chipset it uses. I'm happy with the speed any of them give over SneakerNet(TM). My conclusion? I would choose Netgear again since the price is right and tech support advanced shipped a replacement product (had to RMA a hub that attracted lightning).

I've nothing against the other models, but I don't need to pay more money for the features I don't use.

So chevelle... uh, Netgear is not suck. :)

heh, thanks for the reassuring words bro. I'm pretty much sold on netgear. plus they're not your standard boring green pcb, they're blue, which is kinda cool.
