There are no more modem reviews that I can find. Have been
using a 56k isa Best modem with excellent results. My new
computer will not have an isa only pci. I hear I should only
get a hardware modem. I have thoughts of networking my new computer to my old one but assume it would slow things down as the old is a pentium mmx200 on a tx97. Thoughts? New machine will be a thunderbird 800.

If you are broke, go with a 3com or USR Winmodem, they're pretty good quality for about 30 bucks; less troublesome than a lucent chipset modem, and not a piece of crap like connexant or pctel.

Next step up would be something like a zoom hardware modem.

If you are rolling in money get a Courier V.Everything, this thing will connect at 53K over a piece of string. They also cost like $300:(

I picked up a Diamond Supramax at Sam's for about 20 dollars - works fine in my wife's computer. Before getting a PCI modem make sure you'll have a PCI slot available for it in which it will work. Adapters can be fussy about where they're placed. If no suitable PCI slot available, you can get an external comm port modem - and USB modems work fine also.
