Need new modem - any suggestions?

I am upgrading to a new motherboard w/o an ISA slot and need to purchase another modem. Any suggestions on what to buy? Thanks!

Believe it or not, a Lucent based winmodem works quite well. Best value around for about $25 if you shop. 🙂 They use a little more CPU than a hardware based modem, but that is not significant anymore with most of the powerful CPU's today. PCI hardware modems are not very plentiful and expensive.

Gambler...do a quickie search for "modem" in the General Forum and you'll instantly have about 2 hours worth of reading on this topic.

What are you insane??
Lt win or lucent win modems are crap, they won't work in win nt, and most versions of linux. They maybe cheap but are by no means good. Heard the saying you get what you pay for, buy a US robotics if you want very good, or external non software modem if you don't want to pay too much

If you only have one line try Actiontec's call waiting modem, it's a pci card with a hardware controller and works in linux. Its kinda expensive though.

I've been using a Lucent Lt modem for 3-4 months now and been getting consistant 45-48K connections with no problems......Greg

HARDWARE! Should I stress that again? HARDWARE! Winmodems are crap compared to a hardware modem. I've got the most generic hardware modem on the planet and it will kick the crap out of any winmodem, USR, Lucent, whatever you've got.

I have been working at an isp for the last 12 months, avoid software modems (if you can aford it). I agree a crap hardware modem is better than a great software modem, but since u were using an isa modem before everything will seem great compared to it.
Get an external too, they are better too.
