Hi, ...well I'm transfering to new college, and I will be parting with my much beloved celeron 450(300a) when I move in first week of January.

Anyways, I am building a new AMD system, but I don't think I will be able to wait much past early january.
Should I postpone as much as much as possible to pick up a ddr board, pc2100 ram and cpu as soon as they are available? I heard reports (from the register) the the new 266 boards are having noise issues (and other issues?), and could be delayed till feb. And the ali magik board seems a bit slow.

My second option would just be to buy a decent kt133 mobo now, duron 600 and a little bit of cheap ram(115+60+60=$235). Then wait like half a year or so and pick up a now more mature ddr board, hopefully cheap pc 2100 and and hopefully a inexpensive enough 'paloimo'(however its spelled) chip.

Of course the second option envolves considerable 'waste'($175 of stuff incompabatible with ddr), but I figure I can just build a second pc out of it... acutally I will be in cramped living conditions(university housing) and space will be a issue, but c'mon a second pc is cool.

So what do you think? Buy a kt133 based system now, and buy the ddr goodness later, or hold off till the fist ddr board comes out?

I would buy whatever you need now if you can't hold out past January. You'll be able to wait for 2nd gen DDR boards, which should be much more stable (and proven).

do the cheap route, duron 600 geforce2mx whatever you can get that is cheap. A 600mhz system will play all games and run all software very well now, and probably for a while into teh future. I have a p3-650@866 and a duron 650@1000. I don't plan on upgrading these things for a year, one is a server so it doesn't matter, but I will probably wait past the next crop of processors vid cards and get teh ones after that (NV30? pc-2600 ddr?). Get your duron and o/c it, or just run at default. Either way you get a fast processor on the cheap.

Buy now. It will be a while before you can get your hands on a PROVEN DDR based system.

Buy now... I jumped off the DDR wagon to take advantage of the cheap sdram prices right now.

yep, buy now. It pains to sell stuff later at a loss. But DDR system is 5-20% faster (let's say 10%) overall. You'd be pushed to notice the difference. And SDRAM IS cheap. I believe you could still use that Duron in a DDR, so buy now, maybe upgrade in a year if you hafta (bet you won't really).

If I was in your shoes, I would buy it now. When DDR comes out in 2 months or so and you are still interested, then you couldn sell your system on ebaay for about the same price as you would buy it now--people on ebaay are ignorant and pay MORE than the current costs.

I have done this myself--just sold a TWO YEAR OLD Abit BH6 on ebaay for $80 when I bought it for under $100...TWO YEARS AGO!!

I am sure others here can confirmed about ignorant ebaayers.
