Need New Canalphones

Note: I've looked at the other "Best Headphones for iPod" topic, but the phones mentioned there were about $100 and were not portable. The topic did give me a few ideas, though.

I have a Neuros HD 20GB (link goes to open source development site) digital audio player and I was using Sony MDR-EX71SL canalphones. A few days ago, they broke (the left channel stops working). I'm not sure whether I should look for something new or just buy another pair of the Sony ones, which I was pretty happy with. I figure that if I can get something better for less than $50 (not including shipping) then I'll upgrade, but if not then I'll just replace the Sony ones.

I like canalphones because they don't fall out of my ear like earbuds (eg: Sennheiser MX400) and they isolate the music so that it's basically all I hear and I'm the only one who hears it (I listen to music while in bed, so isolation is important as to not wake my roommate). So, basically, what would you recommend? Are there any canalphones or noise-isolating portables (like the Koss KSC-75) that you'd recommend? Thanks in advance.

EDIT: List removed since nobody seemed to be familiar with the choices anyway.

Can't really tell you, because I've got the e3c's (had the mdr 71's before). Never going back to cheaper canalphones 😛.

Thanks for the recommendation on the PX100, rleemhui.
I guess that the E3c are far better than the EX71, right? So I would probably notice a big with E2c phones as well.

Are there any good phones that I haven't mentioned on the list above?

I'll give this one bump in the hopes that someone may be able to recommend something to help me. After that, I'll let this topic float to the back of the boards.

Well, I've heard the Sharp MD33's are good. You can get those at www.audiocubes.com

Some people swear by Koss "The Plugs". I'm buying my sister a Samsung YEPP T7Z for her bday, and I'm gonna get Sharp MD33's to go with them.

I don't want to get her MDR's, and I know she didn't like the fit of the Shure e3c's (around ear and such) so I'm gonna try the Sharp MD33's 🙂.

I'm also curious to how they sound - I hear they're pretty legit.

I will add that I would only get the PX100's if you don't plan on running with them and such, I imagine they are not probably very stable while running although I have never used these while running. For that purpose I would go with the Shures.

Otherwise, I really think you should consider the PX100's 🙂

I used to have the Koss "The Plug" before I had the Sony EX71. I think the Sony set sounded better because I didn't really like the bass on the Plug. That's just me, though. The Sonys also fit better in my ears. I wouldn't mind ordering from audiocubes.com, but I don't have a credit card. I have to convince someone here at college to order something for me. Whether or not they feel safe ordering from a vendor they've never heard of (and I know they haven't heard of AudioCubes) is not anything I can help.

How well do the PX100s isolate the sound? That is quite important to my decision as I need to be able to listen to my music without disturbing others. If they can keep the music in my ears, then I'll probably go with the PX100. If not, then I'll still keep them in mind.

Thanks for the replies.

I've looked at Head-Fi and they are a good source of info, but many of them are willing to spend much more (and carry much larger phones) than I am able\willing.

I posted a topic just like this on the NeurosAudio.com forums and was recommended the Koss KSC-75. Apparently, quite a few at Head-Fi use them for portable headphones and are very happy with them. Does anyone here have any experience with those (or could anyone compare them to the EX71SL)?

Ugh, I hate the MDR-EX71 and 51 series earphones. They're a great design and have excellent sound quality for the price, but I've never heard of so many people who have had one of the channels lose sound. Just look at the reviews from amazon.com, my 51s lost sound from the right side. I recently bought EX71s, but I'm already expecting them to lost sound within a few months.

So this is a common problem? Well then I certainly won't be buying these again is that is the case. Right now, I'm not sure if I want the Panasonic RP-HJE50 or the Koss KSC-75.
