Need networking help bad...

This is for my sister's apartment...

She has a roomate that wants to get cable internet, and hes got a PC.
Shes got a notebook.

They both have NIC cards already, hers is obviously a PC card for her laptop.

Im thinking if they get a crossover cable and the PC owner gets a second NIC card, they can connect to each other
with some proxy software. And then they can both use the cable....

Im being told by all these best buy/compusa puppets that this isnt possible without a router.

Can anyone help me here?

It's possible. No doubt about it. It's really just a matter of what operating systems they're running is gonna determine how much of a pain it'll be. There are also potential issues with the PC (processor speed, RAM, available slots, etc).

The quickest, cleanest solution (IMHO), would be to buy a switch/router combination. They available for semi-cheap, they get to share the bandwidth with no performance impact on the gateway machine, and some also have printer servers built in so they can share the printer through the network. Having the firewall is also a big plus (and again, no performance impact on the "gateway" machine.

I use a LinkSys (no print server), D-Link is also very popular around here.

If they have a few bucks to spend, there are also some switch/router units that include a wireless gateway. Then your sister could go mobile, computed on the patio/balcony...in the laundry room...whatever.

FWIW
