Need my last component for a quiet PC( HSF)

I currently have a retail AMD HSF one, I would like to get something, without total spending more than 20 dollars. I dont mind just buying a new 60mm fan that is quiet and mounting it onto my current heatsink, definetly need to replace the current fan, nothing above 22 dba, 20 or less preferable, is there anything that will work? Also I really would like to know what the CFM or the Retail AMD HSF fan is, that way I can just replace it with a quieter one of equal or better cfm.

In the sub $20 pricerange, I'd go for an alpha 6035. 20db may be pushing it depending on your processor though. I've got one with a 12cfm/20db Sanyo Denki, and it handles a Tbird 900 alright, but if you've got a hot case or much over a gig, probably ditto on the SOL.

very discouraging, oh well, are there any Heatsinks around 15 bucks taht i can plug a 80mm fan onto? would that work?

With decent performance? no, you're SOL. Cooling is a very important part of computers, if you're gonna be a computer enthusiast like I think we all are. Spending $70+ on cooling is not uncommon. I think I've spent well over $200 It's a hobby. You obviously cannot have a hobby without having the resources that are required of it

What was wrong with the retail HSF? Dont tell me you want to overclock...

my only problem is with noise, I would gladly just switch the fan to something quieter. I have no problem wiht the heatsink, it is the fan that bothers me, toooo loud. I am just looking to replace the fan witha quieter 60mm but everyone has told me that my noise requirements are too low and that i need a new Heatsink too to mount a bigger fan or something like taht

Ok, first off, what processor do you have? And what kind of temps are you getting with the retail fan? That'll tell you how much room you have to work with changing fans.

20db is possible, but the $20 for a good heatsink and quiet fan is pretty hard.

I personally think $70 is outrageous, my CPU didn't cost that much. I'm pretty quiet, and I'm at about $25.

I'm running a 1.4 ghz amd thunderbird 266fsb, i get temps of about 56 running just internet explorer and windows media player with the retail hsf.

Cooling. As in cooling your whole computer. Add in costs for a hole saw, dremel, grills, fans, etc... Quickly add up, but if its your hobby, its well worth it.

benny: just get a decent 60mm fan that pushes around 25 cfm. Sunon and YS Tech make good fans, around 30dBA.

Could I put a 60 to 80mm funnel and then put on a PCP&C 80mm with 28cfm? and just attach that to my retail heatsink? Wouldnt that give me 28cfm without getting too much sound?

A 60mm to 80mm adaptor with the PC P&C fan will work to lower the noise, you won't even hear it. But....there is some sort of turbulance effect with the adaptors so your temp will probably rise 3 or 4 degrees. A 60 degree temp is still in the safe range for Athlon chips.

56 degrees is a little high for an idle temp. Do you have any case fans? If you can get your case cooler with an idle temp of 51 degrees, then the adaptor/fan would bring the temp up to where you are right now. Try running your computer with the side panels off and monitor your temp, if it is cooler then you need more case fans, if not, then you have a lousy heat sink. The PC P&C 80mm fans are excellent case fans too.

Hey, I was working on my case last night, and I found some noisy fans, will replace them soon, I also rounded my cables, because the way my motherboard is they go right in front of my input fan, so now it is down to about 44 idle with two of the worst fans ever, both ripped off from old computers, no idea about CFM. So, I think I will be ok with a 60 to 80 mm adapter and a PCP&C along with 2 of those for case fans, one input one output, and 1 of those in my PS.
