The company I am currently working for wants me to get MSCA. Should I get MSCA or MSCE? I will mostly just be maintaining the servers. I also need to know where is the best place to get training? Should I go to some training facility, should I do online self paced training, or should I just get a training book? The company has told me they are ok for around $2500. I called one of the training places and they said they charged around $6000-$8000. I live in NC and need help pretty quickly since I am a college student and will be going back in August.

Buy the books, review the books.

Sign up for classroom training on the one or more topics you are most clueless about.

Individual class tend to run ~US$2000.00.

Global Knowledge runs a pretty good class, and I believe they're national.

Stay away from 'brain dump' sites. You won't learn anything, and up to 25% of the questions & answers are just flat stupid wrong.

Study & learn.

Good Luck

Thnx for the info.

I went to global knowledge and their msca boot camp is $5000 and their msce is $8000, but you think it is better to just take a class on the subject I am most uncomfortable with, right?

Spending thousands on classes is really unnecessary for MCSA or even MCSE. You can spend a couple hundred bucks for books and get your self a copy of virtual PC and you'll be set.

well the software is not a problem since I have server 2003and virtual pc. Since I am in ECE at my college we get certain ms products for free. Does anyone have any suggestions for which books to buy? I know that ms offers their own training kit with a book and software, should I just get that?

Well your not going to get a boot camp for 2500 bucks. That'll cover a single course if you don't have to worry about food and lodging anyway.
For your MCSA or MCSE question. MCSE, if I remember correctly is just a couple of more tests so get your MCSA first and then continue on for the MCSE at your own pace. Books and a VM environment. You can also do braindumps though obviously that is suspect in terms of the worth of your certification. However, if your company is wanting you to do this fairly quickly it is a method of getting the cert and since you already have the job you can always get the experience and thorough knowledge of the materials on the job.

Agreed. Spend the total amount your company will pay, and nothing more, MCSE just won't get you the type of pay increase that it once would.

I've heard bad things about the ms press books. Personally I like sybex, but some of their books have been better than others

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was suggesting: Get a set of books (I like the MS Press books, but Sybex is also very good) and go through 'em ... you don't mention a timeframe, but take your time, look at the material.

If there's some aspect that is more difficult than the others, then sign up for a Global Knowledge (or similar) class.

If you have other questions about some of the other material, write it down and take it to class with you ... either the instructor (before class, after class, or during breaks) or other students can do a little whiteboard work or discussion and help you to resolve the questions.

Personally, I'd recommend going for MCSA to begin with, then talk to your company about getting the MCSE .... show them that the MCSA money wasn't wasted, and that you studied etc. Make sure they are aware of your progress as you pass the tests and finally get your cert.

In many organizations, stuff like that ends up being part of your "development goals" towards your raise & bonus ...

Good Luck,

Scott

I have been looking at reviews of the ms press and sybex books on amazon and still can't decide which ones to get. Any more opinions are appreciated (and thanks for the ones so far).
