Well you're technically not supposed to use HDD based mp3 players while running, but my Zen Touch (which they offer in 40 gig sizes) has always ran just fine while running, and i've never had a problem with. It's buttons stick out a bit too so you can hit them through your pants, which is nice.

I'd be reluctant to run with any HDD based MP3 player. Assuming the person wants to keep it for a while, your better off stick with a flash-based player. Unfortunately, flash players aren't anywhere near 40GB in size....I know you can get 1GB players, and the current max is probably 2GB.

my hdd based player went camping with me, it still works like a charm, it has been hit a few times, dropped a couple, still goes. granted, I try and keep it as safe as possible. but im sure if you kept it secure, you shouldn't have a prob, unless it is defective

She is dead-set on at least 40GB capacity and it being able to function without skipping while running.

40GB for running? How many miles are you running here?

I'd get a 1GB flash based MP3.

If that's the case, I'd go with one of the newer "mini" players (Ipod Mini, Dell Pocket DJ, etc) and get one of those carrying cases for it.

How many weeks will she be running at a time?

There's no need for 40GB for running. Plus it's going to be much heavier than a flash player. I have a Creative 256MB that I use when I run and it works great.

i have a 60gb ipod but i got the shuffle because its not a hd player which means it wont be damaged during work..or RUNNING. and also its cheap so its disposable if it gets banged up. my 2 cents.

also no hd player should skip so skipping shouldnt be an issue

No hard drive player is rugged. I droped my flash-based player (which i also used it for running, biking, working out) so many times and it's still plays perfectly after 2 yrs.

And why would someone want to run with a 40gig player? running and searching through all those songs wont be easy.

My thoughts exactly when I read that. Wish I could throw around words like "cheap" about a $99 MP3 player.

For those who say 40GB is way to much for running I agree but that's not the point. The point is not always having to load/delete music before running. It gets annoying having to go pick out music before working out. It's nice to just have it all there and go when you want without worrying about always having the same small amount of music on the player.

sure and sorting through 40gbs while your supposed to be running is plenty easy right?

OP get her a 40 gig ipod & a 256mb flash based player. The player will not cost that much in the grand scheme of things, she'll still get her ipod. And if she want's she can use the 1337 white ipod earbuds with the flash player.

to me yes...and when you compare the 60gb vs the shuffle..the shuffle is definitely more disposable ;)

My brother-in-law has gone through three minis in six months. (Apple has replaced all three) He runs 5+ miles each day, and the drives can't take the beating.

If she's set on 40GB, buy 40 1GB flash drives.
