So, I'm going to be that guy - Great, a guy donated money so a woman could have a life-saving procedure. Well, thousands of people a year are living donors - giving a body part to save a life. Millions of people donate money to charity...anonymously, and even more donate their time to charitable events. I'm not sure how this guy is any different. Oh, I get it, his story got in the paper, just like those folks who leave huge tips.

I'm going to be that guy that asks you where anybody said this guy is better than a living donor. I can't find it, so you must have made it up. Nobody said this guy is better than any other donor.

Being charitable is not a competition. At least it's not supposed to be. Please don't turn it into one.

I always though that if I became rich, I would do stuff like this as a hobby. Can you imagine someone changing someone's life by randomly paying off their mortgage, funding their child's education, or paying for their medical bills? There are so many deserving people out there that really need a break. I was a big comic book fan as a kid and this is as close as anyone can get to being a true superhero :)

Well, that's just it though, he didn't do it for the attention. It was anonymous and sent directly to her (literally handed right to her). If he wanted the attention, he could have gone through some media outlet. For all we know, it could be something he does all the time. This just happened to be a large single donation to an individual in need.

Stranger, I don't know who you are, but we surely need more people like you. People who'd do good things just because of that's who they are, and don't care if anyone knows about it.

Honestly, there are people like this all around you. People who give to others without a thought for themselves. People who feed and clothe others, provide them shelter and care.

Just because they don't have $120K to give doesn't make them any less worthy of your praise. Take a look around at the people in your community and I bet you'll find stories even more worthy of acclaim.

Then pitch in and help.

Contrary to popular belief, Canada has mediocre health care. My Uncle in BC comes to Seattle to get cancer treatment because ...

And in some ways the U.S. health is inferior to Canada's and in some ways superior. Even more so if you are richer rather than poorer.

back on topic.

it's extremely cool of the donor to do this and not try to get attention for it.

I have to disagree, the man didn't reveal who he was or do any media interviews so it's not like he wanted his name plastered all over the headlines and 120K to one person is generous indeed.

You're right that I don't have to look far, and I praise anyone with the same heart.
But every now and then, we need a reminder amongst the calamities of the world.

Thanks for playing.

People here seem to be misinformed about the Canadian health care system. First of all, it is a single payer system, it is not entirely free. I pay for portions of my coverage every month.

That being said, my coverage for price easily beats out what I could get in the US for the same price.

I do not have additional wait times to see my general practitioner, there are more walk in clinics even and you can be seen same day.

Non-vital medical procedures may have additional wait times (such as knee surgery) and may take awhile.

Extremely new treatment is not always available, but I'd say the level of access for the normal person is far superior in Canada than in the US.

Finally: It's great to see an anonymous donor come forward to aid people in medical expenses.

My point is that there are millions of anonymous donors every year. Why is this news?

Because of the mannerism in which it was done which in itself is a bit out of the ordinary. And, we all want a bit of good news rather than your typical displays of inhumanity in every front page. Why is it so bad that this is news? Do you have something against it? Does it make you feel guilty?

You jelly?

i'm personally sick of reading about GoFundMe stories and anonymous people helping others "in need". They end up revealing themselves for their 15 minutes of fame. when will a fundraising page be created for me?

I don't think we have the greatest free health care in the world.
She has to pay because obviously the service is not offered in Canada.
She has to come to the USA to get the treatment because it isn't offered in Canada, but is offered in the USA.

Are you dense?

No, I am not dense. It wasn't stated in the article.

I was under the impression from all the Canadians raving about how great the health care in Canada is that they would cover this life threatening disease for this poor women.

Sorry if you are offended.

I don't think anyone has claimed Canada has the Best HC in the World. What we have is HC for all.

In this particular case, this is a new treatment and I suspect might still be experimental. Such treatments are not implemented into the system until they have a track record.

Never mind ... I don't want to crap up the thread.

Yup. Then the question is: WHY is it not offered in Canada?

Since the US started trying to copy the healthcare systems of other first world countries, it will eventually stop being the world's destination for advanced medicine. Doctors won't have any incentive to offer risky or new procedures that government healthcare won't pay for. Innovation will stagnate.
