I've pretty much finalized all components of the computer I'm building except the monitor...I want a 19", under $350, and have narrowed it down to:
Samsung 950p or Optiquest Q95
anyone have or used either and can help me choose? I've seen slightly better reviews of the 950p, but read it doesn't work in Win2k, which I'll be using. any help is appreciated :)

have you considered the NEC 95F??
Search the HOT DEALS forum- there's a couple of threads on it. It's well under $300, shipped -right now.

SAMSUNG???? That OPTIQUEST is made by Viewsonic but I can't believe that is your only choices for under $350 for a 19" monitor. Phillips, Viewsonic, NEC, to name a few. Go to www.insight.com and do a search for montiors under $350 and see what comes up. SAMSUNG is NOT the worse monitor out there by far but (like the electron acceleators KDS, SAMPO, SMILE, that are junk, sorry guys)...there are far better names that make 19" monitors for under that price.

Things to check for:
Dotpitch: no bigger that .28
Vert Refresh Rate: no smaller than 70Hz
Scan Rate: the bigger the better, at least 38KHz
Bandwidth: the bigger the better, measure in MHz
On Screen Programming: you almost have to try them to see which you like better. Some I hate, some I love.

This is enough for starters...

I'd have to say the 950p because it looks to have better specifications and I believe the Samsung brand is better than the Optiquest brand.

sorry H.A.R.M, but i have to strongly disagree with you on that. samsung and KDS are top notch, its just that they cover a wide range of market so some of their low end stuff isnt all that great. phillips, on the other hand, is nothing more than J.U.N.K. i will say its better than conpaq ones ;)

btw, back in the days of 17GLSi, samsung swept most awards for their excellence, with their fame only to be matched by sony.

Samsung has got my vote. ViewSonic I think tends to be a little overrated in my opinion, still a good monitor though. But basicaly I think their are really only two monitors, ones that use the Trinitron tube and the others that use the Mitsibishi one.
