Need money now: How do pawnshops work?

Ok, here's the situation. I need 300 bucks by wednesday, August 8th 2001. I had like 1400 when high school ended, but then parties and events and the hot deals forum got me down to 100. Now, the bill for a trip to Catalina Island that i booked comes. Gotta pay it by wednesday but I can't access my financial aid until next friday, August 17th. Now, most of my friends are broke-ass and I'm really hoping one has a stash or something.

Ok, so, if they're all poor and have no savings like me, then I think I'm gonna pawn my laptop, a graduation gift I got. New retail would be worth about 1300. So, I'm wondering how Pawn shops work. Do they give me money and stuff, and I have till a certain time to give them back the money and get my laptop back? Will my laptop be safe with them? I was figuring I'll pawn my laptop and then access my finanacial aid in a week, then get my laptop back.

you'd be much better off begging your parents to borrow the $300... Or get a cash advance on your credit card - though you would end up paying about $330 to pay it off.

Dun wanna beg off my parents cuzz then they'll drill me for spending all my moeny on crap. I can't get advance on my credit card since I'm not 18 till August 30th, so no card till like September 3rd, at the soonest.

Pawnshop would probably give you $200 for the laptop, then you would have to give them $300 in about 30 days, or you lose the laptop and they sell it, or take it home and e-bay it.

Reality check: 99% of all the people that pawn stuff never go back to repurchase what they pawned because they won't have the money in time. No offense, but you got a laptop as a graduation present in May/June and you're pawning it two months later? Wont' your 'rents kill you (literally)? I would.......laptops aren't cheap. A looooooooong time ago, I pawned an engaement ring that I had (got it back, long story). I paid $800 for the ring (back in 1988, that was a sh*tload of money) and stil had the receipt. I got $125 for it. I almost sh*t a brick when the dude behind the counter said "$125". Know what he told me? He looked me dead in the eye and bluntly said "do you need the money, or do you not need the money?" I never went back to get the ring. You won't go back for your laptop either. Good luck.

I will get it back, since I have access to like 10 grand next friday.

edit: Umm... they don't have to know the laptop was gone for a week.

edit2: I'm a guy, but yes, I am good looking. 😉 But no, I won't pimp myself.

Need money badly? Get a job man and maybe you make at least 50 bucks a day.
And you say you need 350 so 1 week worth of work should more then enough pay for it. spend wisely buddie don't go crazy on junk stuff. also I think you have better luck winning a million playing lottery then pawning it for a measly 50-100 buck.

hmm, well down here in FL, pawn shops must hold the item for 2 months before they can sell it. If Cali (where i assume you're at) has the same thing, you should be able to pay it off at an inflated price 😀.

I'm counting on friends right now. Damn, pretty much all are flat broke. One that I know I can get it from just left the country on vacation yesterday. Another guy had some car trouble (2 fender benders and a flat tire 2 days ago), so not sure about him. Another guy well... he's into that 2by2 thing, so he's gonna drill me on that, but then if thats what it takes, I'll listen till I leave for college.

Just suck it up and ask your parents for the money. Playing with pawn shops is just asking for trouble.

<< the bill for a trip to Catalina Island that i booked comes. Gotta pay it by wednesday >>

Negotiate an 8/17 pay date for this, at least try before you pawn off your laptop. BTW dipping into your financial aid to pay for a trip, will that even work? It sounds like you need a job to offset some summer spending.

Also, it will go over a lot better to ask your parents for a few hundred dollars now than explain why you need $1k to get your laptop out of pawn.

Yep, I will need a job. I had a job, but then we moved to another house, and I had wisdom teeth taken out and such, so then I stopped working. Yea, bad excuses, but then I suck.

Yea and you are really irresponsible. You aren't going to get offered $300 in pawn for that laptop. Tell your parents and own up to being a loser boy.
