I would try to get a US Robotics or 3com modem. The USR modem I used when I had 56k was the best 56k modem I ever used. On the internet, with the same ISP and phone line, I could download at ~5.5kbps with the USR, or about 4kbps with every other modem I ever used!

Are USR modems still avaliable? They don't seemed to be very popular around here mainly due to price and the general public not willing to pay the extra $$$ for USR.

I've not seen many around either, maybe Ebay would be your best bet?

Prices for USR are way to high. Is there some manufactureres as good as USR?
What you think of Creative modems?

If you are going to pay the high price that Creative charges for their "junk", then you might as well buy USR. At least then you know you are getting at least reasonable quality hardware.

A USR "Performance Pro" PCI internal fax/voice V.92 modem is what you are looking for.

Edit: Btw, none of those modems on Creative's site, save for the external serial model, are hardware modems.

USR also, at one point, sold a group of hardware external modem models, that could double as a voice/fax answering-machine (even if the computer was off at the time). However, they were around $300, which is practically the price of an entire PC these days.

I did not know much about creative and prices for theyr stuff when i suggested, well as i dont know it now.
Someone name at least 3-5 top manufacturers except USR, they ask way to much.

If you really want the best in your PC then you'll have to pony up the $80 for a USR Performance Pro. If you don't mind a used one in perfect condition, I may have mine lying around still.

Zoom makes some decent models, or did. Either one with a Lucent chipset (recent WinModem LT model), or perhaps Rockwell hardware chipset.

Get a USR one or find any modem with a Lucent HARDWARE-based chip in it. These are pretty old school and I've only seen a few in the PCI bus. Mostly ISA-based cards. Just don't get a Lucent-based "WinModem"...they aren't any better than the freebies you can find in your local flyers.

I should mention you should ask in the FS/FT section to see if anyone has a nice USR they'll part with for cheap. Good luck!
