As I said above, was given an H.P. system with an AMD 1.4Ghz chip, but, it also had SDRAM. I want recommondations for a MoBo for this chip but want a board with DDR-RAM................I haven't built an older AMD system for ages and don't know which board would be best. I'd like an Asus/Abit if possible..................onboard sound no problem.......................just going to slap together a Linux Box...............:)

there are lots of boards for that.

want cheap? km2m boards (kt266 chipset with onboard everything. accepts DDR and SDR)

Want better? KM4AM-L (KT400a chipset with everything onboard. DDR only)

Want much better? Any mATX nvidia NF2 board with integrated everything.

Just for linux? i would go with the KM2M if you don't plan on anything serious with this setup.

Hey Iron Woode... whatsup man!? :)

I'd recommend eBaying an older mobo, I just got an A7V266-E for use with my Athlon 1.33 and it was $35 Cdn NIB.. cant beat that, and it will work amazing with an older CPU like the T-Bird.

Go for the km400 chipset. The km400 has integrated everything, and will work fine if not overclocking. The abit va-10 is $52 (newegg.com).

If you are looking for a good home for the 1.4, an ASUS A7V8X-X will do. It is $54 at Newegg. Nothing fancy, but has the basics on board. Drop a video card on it and some DDR and you're done. I've used them for basic Bartons down to an old 1.2 and never had any problems.

Thanks guys for some nice suggesstions! I'm so "out of the loop" on this older hardware it's embarrasing! Now just need to decide whether to go with integrated everything, or not. I have a Matrox G450 dual head here somewhere that would work nice........................I'm planning on a single Hard Drive, CD-RW and that's about it...............I'd think a 350W P/S should be sufficient..................Let's say I would want to "boost" the 1.4 a bit.................what could one expect reasonably, and would I need a bigger P/S and better than stock cooling? If so, what's the best cooling (air......no H2O) for these chips?

Thanks again...............:)

Hey ToBeMe, 350W should be fine for that type of system first off.

secondly, you should expect no more than 1.6Ghz from a Tbird 1.4 chip. my 1.33 ran at 1.5 maximum.. a decent OC for that CPU!

You should be able to get by with just about any decently rated socketA cooler... I'd recommend something from CoolerMaster, as I find they are the best coolers out there, and a lot of the time they are well priced. if you want a wicked CPU cooler, check out just about anything from thermalright or swiftech. (overkill IMO)

Hey Craig! I am fine.

Ok which 1.4 do you own? There are 2 kinds. 100 or 133 bus versions. Thunderbird C is the 133 bus version and will out perform the other. These chips run hot. Get a good cooler. I use a Vantec Aeroflow and it works great.

350 watt PSU should be fine.

Like I said, if you want decent but with everything onboard get the KM4AM-L (MSI) as it should be compatible with linux. I use the non A version (KM4M-L) as a second system and it works fine. The KM4AM-L allows the 200 bus cpus to be used. A nice upgrade later would be a Barton like the XP2500+.

Don't expect much in the way of overclocking in a mATX board. You would need a better board for that such as a DFI NF2 Ultra.

Good luck.

There are versions of the KM266 Chipset that support 133SDR and DDR266. I put one in my Dad's Comp anits working great. They should be good for you if you want to be versatile about what memnory you have. Check out ebay, the brand I had was a biostar. GL
