I have been searching for notebook memory for a Compaq Persario 1800T, it has 64mb now, but I want to upgrade to 256mb stick, however the type is kinda weird. The memory is PC-100 144pin, but it is special and not any 144 will do. I saw some on newegg.com,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820172003

"Pros: Good ram, if it'll work with your laptop.

Cons: Many older Compaq laptops (like the first one I tried to install this in) require the 256 MB sticks to have lower-density chips on it. So basically look for 256MB RAM that has 8 chips on it, not the 4 this has. And Kingston sells the type of RAM for those laptops -- but it's nearly twice as much."

but a comment says it does not work because it only has 4 memory chips and the compaqs need memory that has 8!

So I did a search and am finding memory from these memory specialist around $70 for 256, however that is too much for my blood, I would like to find something in the $30 range.

Any help would be nice

Check crucial.com; "Compaq Presario 1800T" isn't listed, but they have an online system scanner which should give a recommended module.

My old IOpener had similar requirements for PC100 SODIMM memory.
You may require memory that has all the chips on one side: 8x 32MB chips = 256MB.
