Need Mem advice

So I've been reading alot recently where people suggest builds and Have some $230 kit of 2gb memory and then people come and say its a waste of money and just get Value ram.

I would love it if someone could clear this up for me - the difference between the CAS number, the timings (3-2-2-5 whaa?) and what it all means in terms of being able to overclock an Opty 170 or 165.

The only exception I've herd is that if you're running a 3800+ its a good idea to get DDR500 just because it makes the overclock way easier since you dont need to run the mem in a divider.

So on a 165 chip with one of the new boards (the epox or asus that are so popular now) would something like this work OK?

thanks

You don't need good RAM to overclock, using RAM dividers works well enough.

If you overclock the RAM too then you will get more performance, but the money you have to spend to get that much increase is excessive, 50% more money for 8% performance.
