My friend's mom has a tumor..she is taking some radioactive medicine to try to cure it. Her doctor told her no one can be around here for a week while she takes the medicine. My friend's mom drank some coke..and my friend drank it not knowing her mom had already drank some of it. Is there any danger?

Thanks,
Null

I don't think so, it might have more to do with exposing the compromised person to as few infectious agents as possible. Either one could call their doc and know for sure though.

I doubt there is but hey I'm not a doctor.

I would HIGHLY and I do stress HIGHLY suggest that the person go see their doctor as a PRECAUTIONARY measure.

You can never be to safe with radioactive stuff. Although you can take a decent amount of radiation before any long term effects are seen.

but then again I am only a pre med student so take my stuff with a grain of salt cept going to see a doctor.

I would say no. but given the fact that i have absolutely no information on this, I can not be a reliable source.

call a doctor to find out.

There is no complication for your GF sharing the drink with her mom.

Cancer is not a disease, so don?t treat it like one, and the patient is still a human with feeling, so please don?t shun them for they don?t have any thing to do with it.

Sorry to brake the news to you, but radiation treatment is the last step that they treat for cancer, and it is very difficult for the patient, so you should try to make their life as easy as possible.

And I feel sorry for you and your GF family, because cancer is one of the worst if not the worst sickness that a person can have...It is very difficult to watch some one you love slowly faded away.

My impression was he was concerned because his GF's mum was taking a radioactive medicine & [edit]the GF[edit] drank from the same bottle or glass, not so much that she had the tumor.

[edit]Actually my reply was to lowtech and I wouldn't have posted otherwise, just disregard.[/edit]

Actually, What I'm trying to ask if there is anything dangerous with my FRIEND accidently consuming some of the medicine in a bottled coke if infact there is medicine in her mom's saliva and her mom's saliva did get into the coke.

Her mom is fine...but even the doctor stayed away from her mom while she took the medicine. The family was instructed to not even touch her for a week. She has to stay in her room for that same week as well.

I'm wondering if there is any potential danger here.

Thanks,
Null

My guess is that the Mom's immune sytem is compromised by the treatment. She is at risk, not your friend.

It won't hurt to get a professional opinion. I'm not a doctor, I just play on on the Internet.

PS I've been around people who were being treated for cancer w/radiation before. The main concern was always for the patient. However, I'm no expert. Let us known the answer if you find out.

Thanks!

I had an aunt that had leukemia. She was on something similar to your friend's mom. I know that no one was really supposed to be around her or drink after her. I don't know the specific reason, but I would definitely consult someone in the medical profession. You can even call your local hosptial's ER. There is medical staff there 24 hours a day (Duh) and they might be able to answer some of your questions. No guarantee, but you won't lose anything for trying. Good luck and please let us know what happens.

having worked with and around radioactivity in a medical lab for 3 years, my first answer would be no. that person is not in danger of radioactivity. as someone stated before, you would have to be subject to radioactivity exposure for ample amount before you would be in danger. afterall, almost all appliances emit some sort of radioactivity continually, and we live with it all our lives. okay, i'm getting sidetracked.

as with others who said so already, best advice would be given from qualified professionals, who would be people in medical field, not from androidtech members. but i understand your concern, i probably would banter away on some message board if that helped. oh, and this mom who has the tumor.... she has a tumor and taking radioactivity as a treatment... sound to me like it indeed is cancerous. if it was benign, couldn't they just go in and take it out? i don't know what the diagnosis is exactly, but ingesting radioactivity is pretty heavy duty. but then again, i'm not a doctor and that's why i'm on here posting.

From my experience with a family member and cancer... the reason to stay away to protect their weak immune systems. I truely doubt anything will happen to your friend. as everyone has already said.. go ask a doctor to make sure.
