Checked out AVforums and it sure is a lot of information to digest. I did read through the FAQ section. It seems like Plasma isn't a bad choice, but neither is an LCD either. The FAQ was from 2005 so I'm not to sure how much to read into it. The more I think about it, it's going to be a pain in the butt to play PC games on a TV anyway with the keyboard/mouse setup unless I think of a new setup.... So if that is the case Plasma seems like the way to go.

Just be careful with AVS, as there are many people there who are much more anal about their sets than you will be, more than likely.

Panasonic 50" plasma. You can get a 1080P version for < $1k.

This. You've already said that you aren't a big gamer, so it should be about picture quality. The new G10 series from Panny will be untouchable if that's your primary concern.

Best buy is selling the TC-P50G10 for $1300, so your dad should be able to get it for $1000 or so, if the guy really does give your dad a deal. As the prices you posted for the LN40B550 & KDL40V4100 are nothing special, you may have look at the TC-P46G10. Here's a review, go see it for yourself, and report back.

Still check around town for deals. I got my Panasonic plasma 2weeks ago for $890 at Target (TC-P50U1). We are very happy with it

Are the plasma's really that much better then LCD's? And how bad is the PC use for plasmas?

It depends on your definition of better. Take a look at this chart. The price column should be changed, IMO, but I think the rest of it is fine.

The problem PC use might cause would be burn in from leaving the same image up on the screen for a long period of time.

I think I'm just going to go for the Plasma as it seems to be better for watching shows and sports on (that's all I'm going to use it for). I'll get the plasma, and some time down the road, probably next year, I'll upgrade my PC monitor to 16:10 1900x1200. Thanks for the help guys! 🙂

Despite the plasma fanatics' statements, no.

But it is cheaper to get a similar PQ with plasma.

Explanation? Plasma's do (usually) have better PQ than LCD's.
