Need major help with tons of performance hogging mysteries!

Okay, hey guys.

To start off, specs are:

AMD 64 3200+ (at 2.4 ghz)
Asus K8V SE Deluxe
1024MB Corsair XMS PC3200 RAM
160GB Seagate SATA 7200rpm
ATI 9800 Pro
SB Audigy 2 ZS
Windows XP

My main problem I belive is that there are tons of stuff slowing me down here. When I CTRL+ALT+DEL right now, I am getting a PF Usage of: around 315MB and CPU usage jumping around from 0, to 2, to 7, and 44 proceses running just now with Firefox, AIM, and XFire opened. That seems WAY too high. Idling with nothing opened at all, I am still in the 200's which just does NOT sound right. I disabled some stuff like Ipodservice, itunes helper, etc stuff like that in the msconfig thing, but I still cant help it from being that high.

I have ran the latest versions of Adaware SE and Spybot, as well as Norton 2004 Pro and I have no issues there it seems. Any advice for help here? Could this be a problem with game performance, since I do get lower FPS and such than I remember getting when I first set up the computer.

Thanks in advance for any help! 🙂

If you are using windows XP Pro that is about right. Even when I did a fresh install, It was already taking up 270 mb. I guess since each version of windows gets more and more bloated you see more processes running.

Check out some tweaking guides. Here are soem sites with plenty

http://blackviper.com
http://tweakguides.com

http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/xptweaks/supertweaks1.htm
http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,5155,00.asp
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/OptimizeXP.html

Many of the teaks in those guides are repeated but all have valuablke information. I do not suggest doling all the tweaks in all those guides though as some are bad tweaks. Just pick out the ones you want to do.
