I want to replace the stock horn on my bike with a louder, lower tone one. The stock horn is rated at 97dB (I don't know the frequency, but it's fairly high). Fiamm's site shows most of their horns at about 110-115dB. However, the only Fiamms I can find in stores are either 125dB or 130dB, both of which I think will be too loud. Has anyone changed horns on their car or bike? How loud a one did you get and why?

Your horn cannot be too loud (unless you get a train horn or something absurd like that).

And personally, I think louder pipes and brighter colored bike/clothes are a good idea too. The more you draw attention to yourself, the better.

To those who hate loud pipes on bikes: I'll stop being loud when you oblivious car drivers stop hitting us.

I swapped out the single tone horn on my '74 VW Bus with a duel tone monster I bought from my local HIPO dealer, unfortunately the stock wiring harness was unable to cope with the amperage draw so I ended up installing a 30 amp relay to feed them.
She sounds like a frieght rain coming down the road now :)

I don't think you can have to loud of a horn on a motorcycle.

I've had to many close calls on my motorcycle to know that the more they hear you, the better.

I agree about the color, I prefer yellow, and my headlight is always on. However, I can't/won't put louder pipes on my bike (it's only a 250, for one thing). I'm just wondering how loud 125dB is. 97 to 125 is about 10 times as loud.

Replaced the beep horn on my Vibe with one of these: http://twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/2137/170/

I think it was pretty much the loudest electric/air horn hybrid available at the time. Very fast response since it's electric... real popular on bikes since it's so compact. They have an even more compact version too... check around.

Make sure you have adequate wiring to drive the amps this thing needs... if you're under-wired it won't be as loud as it could be.

Fiamms makes horns that will fit on your bike. It is a huge improvement over stock. You should also consider motolights or PIAA's for the front to increase your visibility. Loud pipes do very little in real life situations to increase your survival chances.

Ride safe,

Excellent choice, I installed one on my vehicle as well. Definitely the way to go. WAY louder than the Fiamms.

BTW, in terms of sound measurement, it's very important to take note of WHERE the db rating is measured from. Sound pressure drops off quickly at distance. 139dB at 4-inches is 115dB at 6-feet.
