Thanks for the help on the A/C & Furnace purchase, but I've got four large appliances to add to the "renovation". I've pretty much decided to bite the bullet and buy the Maytag "Neptune" series washer & drier. That'll be about $1,700 for the pair. The price is fixed by Maytag, so no wheeling and dealing on those, other than free delivery and gas connection hose, etc.

Does anybody own these units and not like them? Are they worth the cost? I was kicking around getting the Frigidaire "Gallery" Washer for about $630, but the Maytag seems much sturdier. Sears front load is about the same price and looks like it's made by Frigidaire. Suggestions?

Looking also for a gas free standing 30" range and refrigerator with freezer on the bottom. Anybody just LOVE their appliances? Want to share your reasons for buying one over another? I'm all ears!

Thanks!

I just bought the Maytag Atlantis series washer/dryer combo for ~ $1000 based on what I've read from epinions. They have a lot of stuff there with comments.

What type of A/C unit did you end up purchasing?

Here's the top 4 (Lifted from subscription-based Consumer Reports):

Maytag Neptune MAH7500A[W] $1,370 Excellent, but Maytag has been among the more repair-prone brands of front-loaders. Lots of features. Quiet. Cannot be stacked.

Kenmore (Sears) 4104[2] $700 An excellent, relatively inexpensive front-loader. Lots of features. Quiet.

GE Profile WPXH214A[WW] $750 Excellent and quiet, with a good collection of features

Frigidaire FWT645RH $700 Excellent and quiet.

For the money, I'd pick up one of the 1/2 price competitors to the Neptune, unless you like showing off your appliances (I keep buying stainless steel stuff) and the matching dryer. All the washers rated excellent in energy use. I have heard rumors of a microwave based dryer that's super efficient...

Thanks for the useful info guys. Just left a huge appliance store. Left our choices with a salesman and told him to crunch some numbers for tomorrow.

I have to go with the Maytag Neptune if I'm going to get my wife to go with a front loader. Their drum is angled up for easier access. I know what you mean about the other front loaders being decent quality. I'm worried about all the bells and whistles being a problem down the road too. If I can talk her into a horizontal drum front load, I'll probably get the Frigidaire.

The quote will include an Amana "Easy Reach Plus" Refrigerator and the Amana "Big Oven", both in stainless finish.

Glad you asked about the A/C & furnace. Grabbed a Comfortmaker "Softsound Plus 80" 2 stage furnace, Comfortmaker cooling coil and Janitrol compressor. Also a Rheem 50 gallon, 50kBTU hot water tank. Anybody interested in the hot water tank may want to look at "Bradford White". I found a 40 gallon, 40kBTU with brass drain valve for only $138.00 locally.

So keep those appliance suggestions coming. Has anybody had a Maytag give them trouble? My brother-in-law just told me to beware of a "Model III" Neptune due to troubles. Going to be doing some more homework on this! :Q
