Need laptop with 16GB RAM, or expandable to 16GB

Hi again everyone,

I'm looking for a laptop that can do 16GB of ram, this is my #1 requirement, I don't play games at all but I have some rather large spreadsheets that forced me to upgrade my desktop already to 16GB and now I need to take my work on the road.

At the PC shops and even online this info is sometimes hard to find, like it's a non issue, but it's a big one for me. I'm assuming when the manufacturer says 8GB max then that's that.

Can you guys recommend me some machines please? I'm a bit partial to Asus but I'll take anything at this point that isn't like $2000, I just need the RAM not a gaming supermachine.

No problem, figured cheaper would be better, i can find you a "better" laptop specs wise, but if all you really need is RAM that is gonna be one of your cheapest options that is almost assured to work.

If that's true for the XPS maybe it's true for some Asus laptops, I'm a bit partial towards Asus products just because they've always worked well for me. I'll try to find out, if not then the HP will probably be my choice, it fits the bill perfectly

Honestly many laptops are compatible, but if the manufacturer hasn't tested it than you wont know for sure unless you know someone else who has tried it.

Most core i3/5/7 machines will take 8gb dimms. Or you can buy a think pad w510/520. They have 4 dimm slots

There is a distinction. The W510 and W520 are great machines... and you can get them for a deal at the lenovo outlet.

That said... The W-510 has two SODIMM slots if it has the dual core CPU and has four SODIMM slots if it has the quad core CPU. The Two slot config supports only 8Gb of Ram and the four slot with quad CPU supports 16Gb... I know.. I own one.

The W-520 is similar story... the i5 only supports 16Gb in two slots, but the i7 supports 32 Gb as it has four slots...

Moral of the story... Be very careful not to make assumptions on the amount of ram a system can support. You have to go first by what the vendor states... not what Intel states for the chipset.

I'm sure if you do some quick googling you can find some forums of the laptop model you are interested in.. just ask whether it supports 16gb and most of the time someone would have already done it and can either confirm or deny that it "supports" 16gb.

Officially the T520 only supports 8 Gb. That you can run 16 is great, but does not mean it is supported ( try calling Lenovo ), nor does it mean you won't potentially run into issues - which is highly unlikely, but hey... I've seen it all.

Oner thought...Maybe you have to learn how to "deal" with a Virtual Memory" instead getting PC with 16G on RAM.....

Most laptops will take 16GB at this point, unless you're talking ultrabooks.
