here is the thing: I have about 2500-2800 to spend on a laptop. I need something that will last me 4 to 6 years. I don't need it to be a top of the line gameing machine, but something that I could use like a desktop. Should I get a DELL inspirion or Lattitude or an IBM ?

What are the advantages between the three, I noticed that the inspiron is up to about 3.4ghz but the ibm and lattitude are at about 2.0ghz. Can some one explain that to me? Where is there a big price difference between the inspiron and the ibm and lattitude?

First the speed differences.

The 3.4Ghz Dell you are seeing is using a Desktop CPU vs a Mobile CPU/Pentium M.

The 3.4GHz is goiing to weigh a ton and get very little battery life. It's what is call a portable computer vs mobile these days. By heavy I mean north of 9 or 10 lbs.

You can also get a desktop CPU ThinkPad from IBM - Same considerations there, though the Dell has better video.

The only real comparison you can do is between the IBM T series and the Latitude.

Dell will probably be cheaper. That's really the only thing it has going for it. Depending on the model 600 - the D vs the M, your results will vary.

IBM will cost more, but has a more solid feel, more durable design, and better technology built into the machine (see: Active hard drive protection system). The IBM also comes with a full function Backup package that is IBM branded/developed so you call the same number for support. Their call centers are in North Carolina and Canada. Dell's consumer support is STILL in India.

I agree. A IBM Thinkpad T42 would suit you well. You most likely have a good desktop already there is no reason to get a desktop replacement. In that case portability and battery life should be the main concern. The T42 fits those needs, and if you plan on taking your laptop anywhere the Thinkpads are tanks compared to the Dells.
