Need laptop recommendation

Looking for somthing that can be used as an imaging station. Preferably onboard NIC. Large, 80gb+ HDD. CDR. No other capabilities neccessary (Or wanted for that matter).

Anyone got some suggestions? I don't care about size, in fact, I'd PREFER a larger, heavier unit if it'll take real, honest-to-god full sized IDE HD's. It'll rarely be used without AC power.

pretty much all laptops these days have onboard nic.
no laptop has full size 3.5 ide hds, not even those desknote type thing.

Get a Dell 600m...I have one, and I think it's a marvel of laptop technology. Of course, I'm having trouble getting the power management function to work in Gentoo, but I'm working on it.

What's your price range?

Dell Inspiron 8500 could be a good match. Also, take a look at mwave's custom built notebooks.

the Dell Inspiron 5100 and 5150 line is a good solid line. I have a 5100. Nice solid laptop. It's running a P4 2.4, able to handle anything I throw at it.

You can always upgrade the HD after you get the lappy. There are 7200RPM drives out now. They are a little pricy however.

SXGA+ screen is a must. Avoid the XGA.

I have the ATI 7500 64mb video card, 512mb ram, 15" SXGA+screen...all for under $1000, intergrated wireless b/g....good deal I think

Compaq X1000 or HP ZD7000. The X1000 is more portable, and the ZD7000 is a true desktop beast (17" Widescreen, 3.2GHz P4 w/ HT, 128MB Nvidia FX5650). Both are excellent deals too; hundreds less than a comparitively configured Dell.

If you can wait, then wait for a deal on the 5100 or 5150, which I have seen as low as $799 loaded.

Another awesome choice is the Compaq X1000 for $1047 and this beast is LOADED!

whyyyy ohhh whyyyy they didnt have the coupons when I bought my 600m 🙁

Never pay retail, never!

I wouldn't pay a penny more than $1,099 shipped for a loaded 600m, good laptop choice though.

actually I did search for coupons, but the only one I found was the 25 off.... 🙁

EDIT: well they also had a $100 off, and free memory upgrade

Price range is $As_cheap_as_possible. Roughly Sub-$1k.

I'm afraid that those Dells would have to be dissassembled and dyed, bright colors aren't exactly in line with my business image. From these I'll wait on a 5100 deal and just use an external HD enclosure.

Unless someone has a true tinkerer's lappy that accepts desktop hardware.

That's still not enough to satisfy me.

I would wait for another sensational hot deal like this 600m for $1009.

Never ever will I own another HP/Compaq -- I've had a notebook wearing both labels and both were horrible. The Compaq couldn't keep drives working; the monitor on the HP just died - 2 days out of warranty. A $60 part is going to cost >$600 to replace...

Get a Dell or a Toshiba.

well at the time I needed a laptop FAST!, cannot wait for hot deals....

The screen resolutions for the X1000 are coming back around the end of September.

The ZD7000 screen is the same used by Toshiba's 17" model; made by LG, one of top screens in any laptop made today. Go to a Circuit City or Best Buy and check it out for yourself (the Toshiba; ZD7000 are shipping at the end of September).

I have an X1000 and have nothing but praises. Running UltraMon with my $80 15" NEC flat panel from Staples as we speak.

The X1000 and ZD7000 are manufactured by the same companies that make Dell's 8500/8600 and Apple's Powerbooks.

HD images. I need storage in somthing that can be carried by one man 😛
You're going to be hard pressed finding a laptop with >80GB of storage unless you find one that accepts 2 HD's. I'd suggest going for whatever's cheapest with a built in CDR and USB2 or Firewire and picking up a huge IDE drive + external USB2/firewire enclosure.
