:disgust: Help.... I have an IBM Travelstar hdd mdl. djsa220 laptop drive out of a Dell. The Dell was allergic to the beer dumped on the keyboard. The idea here was to connect the laptop drive using a 44 pin laptop to ide adapter to my desktop machine. But no,the adapters available were different. The IBM Travelstar drive plugs in to the laptop with a flat connector, akin to a pci card. This won't work. Does anyone know if an adapter like this is available? This company laptop cannot be turned in for service YET if you know what I mean. Pls help if you can. Thanks.

Laptop drives have fewer pins than desktop equivalents and they also use the last two for power, the adaptors are really cheap have a look on e*ay.

the drive you have has the standard connector for your adapter
the ibm drives have an additional adapter attached to the drive itself when its in the laptop to make it easier to switch out between ibms
if you look carefully you should be able to see a way to either pull of this adaptor or maybe some screwes to take it of
the same applies to cdroms in all laptops
i've worked with mnany different brands and models in the past. many have strange connectors but they all have the standard HD or mIDE (for cdroms) conector undeneath all the proprietery stuff

Thanks Yodster. I have the laptop apart and it appears to have the internal hdd connector hardwired(soldered directly to the mb or whatever).I am searching for an adapter that will allow me to attach directly to the Travelstar drive on one end and an ide 40 pin on the other so I can attach it to my desktop machine and pull the data off the Travelstar laptop drive. I do not know if this type of adapter exists. I am sure someone has come across before. Maybe. Thanks.

The hard drive (the shiny part) comes out of the plastic part after you get it out of the laptop. The part you are trying to find an adapter for is, in fact, an adapter itself that seperates from the hard drive. There are four screws you take out and the hard drive unplugs from this transition piece.

Thanks. I have the hdd removed and in my hand. It has the very thin connector, almost like a pci card,on the back of the drive. It is made to the drive. No adapter i have seen so far ,including the two I have, will allow me to connect to the Travelstar drive. Almost to the point of making my own connections to an ide cable. I hope I do not have to go that far. I won't give up yet
