Need Laptop Backpack

hi, my T40 laptop is rather thin, so I am having a hard time finding a backpack that fits it perfectly. I like teh brand Targus just because they seem to be reputable, but the backpack I bought seems a little "big." the laptop doesn't fit in snuggly - there's all this extra space. I had a Targus messenger style bag - but I didn't like all the weight on one shoulder. (I'm a student, so "all the weight" is the battery adapter, cooling pad, wireless mouse, some notebooks, etc in addition to the laptop which alone doesn't weight too much at all)

any suggestions? The Targus backpack I got is called the Groove Notebook Backpack (http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=311347&pfp=cat3) for $30. I really don't want to spend $60 for a laptop backpack - besides, all the pricer Targus backpacks seem to be larger than the one I bought and I don't want my laptop sliding around in the bag.

imho you just need to shop around, I mean as in offline, because when you find a backpack it also has to sit good etc, I have a Targus CUB05v2 and it fits nicely for me, but might be different for you, and I paid 70 ? for it ($ 84) which admittedly is a lot, but after all we're talking about an investment here eh, if you wanna go cheap you can almost forget about targus. but most other brands arent even close in protecting the laptop nor wearing comfort (I have done some shopping around myself).

you'll have to make out for yourself how much a good backpack is worth for you.

why not just get a sleeve ( the one for powerbook 15 fits perfectly) and carry the Tp in a regular backpack? It's actually safer because robbers don't know you are carrying an expensive computer.

I just take those five star notebook with zipper that goes completely around. Just put the laptop in it and zip it, then put it in your backpack. I think it's much safer since people won't eye your laptop bag.

Just get one with removeable 3-ring thing.

The sleeve offers more cushioning than your solution. By I have done what you proposed before also. How do you deal with scratches?

I would go with a sleeve as mentioned above. Someone stated that 15" Powerbook sleeves work well with your model. I'm not sure of the exact dimentions of the T40; however, I do know it's the same thickness as my 15" Powerbook. I personally use a sleeve from www.radtech.us and it fits my PB like a glove. For a backpack I have a Northface Borealis which works great. It's not a laptop bag but it's a very comfy daypack that still looks as new as the day I purchased it even though I put it through hell and back last year. Northface makes some nice bags if you have the money (I paid about 70). They also have 2 bags that have integrated laptop compartments. My bag on the other hand has a divider sleeve at the back which the PB (and your notebook would) fit perfectly in while in a nice sleeve.

ah, good question cy7878. mine is already scratched up so much so i didn't care how much more it can be. and i think you're right. it does scratch the lid.

I like eth sleeve idea I used to put my laptop in my back pack and go, but my laptop is all scratche dnow. I wish i had s sleeve.

I just bought a notebook backpack from High Sierra. Its the "Access" model. I payed $46 for it but retails for $80. I'd shop around if I were you. It is also wise to buy at a retail outlet if you can because there is no good way to tell from shopping on line whether or not you are getting one that actually works well for you. I have a Dell Latitude D600 and the internal sleeve was padded enough to meet my standards. Also, the packpack doesn't look like a notebook backpack which I like a lot. Take a look at that model.

If there is an Apple store near where you are, they sell very high quality sleeves by Incase. They are pricy (about $50), but by far they are the nicest sleeve anywhere. You can also buy the on-line at Apple.com

Also using a sleeve in a regular backpack protects the unit from dirt and dust, in addition to scratches.

Again, I would not recommend using a "computer" bag because of the high visibility. Thief loves a nice computer bag and its contents.

Here in campus, there are many students who have notebooks in Targus bags and they are very conspicuous.
I would like to try offline stores because you can't really test things online.

It might sound like an odd place to find a laptop case, but I got my Gregory Laptop Backpack from Marshalls for only $20. It wouldn't hurt checking out Marshalls or TJ Maxx if you have any near you.

They look like a neoprene sleeve but are made of this pillow/NASA/Star-Wars-SDI-tech memory foam kind of stuff. I don't want to test it, but it seems it might be better than the neoprene sleeves and everything else defeats the purpose of having a small laptop .... :s

Timberland's Walpole. I have one, and it's a darn good hunk of nylon, if I may say so myself. The laptop holder is elastically attached, so it should do fine with your x40. It's 37$ at Ebags.com.
