Need job hunting advice...think Retail.

I just left the military a month ago and have accepted 2 job offers with govt contractors.
I haven't started yet with either one so I am keeping my options open if you are wondering why I accepted both offers.

Anyway, the government is taking FOREVER with these contracts and I need $$ NOW.
I have been collecting unemployment insurance for a few weeks now and I really hate it.
So I am thinking about maybe going to the local mall and try to work temporarily at stores such as B&N, the Gap, or something similar.

Now, having never worked retail, do i just go there dressed casually and ask the manager if they have openings? Do i even need my resume (since none of has anything to do with retail sector)? and would i be overqualified? would they hire a 29 yr old guy with no retail experience over some hip high school kid (i think i'm pretty hip for a 29yr old lol)?

Thanx for the comments

btw, how much do these retail jobs pay? i hope over $10/hr at least...

Do you know anyone with regards to these Gov't jobs you've applied for? I got a job by getting put on the VRA list at which point you can be hand selected from the list without actually having to apply for and interview for the job.

Don't want to bust your bubble but down here, retails only pay around minimum wage or so.
