I have to give a presentation on Tape Back-up drives for my Novell class I'm taking and was wondering if anyone had some good website that talk about tape drives? Also I noticed the 2 most popular formats for tapes are digital linear tapes (DLT) and DAT tapes. Does "DAT" stand for digital audio tape?? Can tape drives come in EIDE formats or even USB? What are the most popular drives out there and how long does a tape last?

Thanks
Dan

TRAVAN was a huge name in backup tapes.....

IBM and Hewlett-Packard also have high-end tape backup devices.

Good luck! :)

I sell a bit of Sony DDS2 and DDS4 DAT Tape Backup drives. SCSI interfaced, reliable, with 20/40GB Disks for the DDS4 (that's 20GB native; 40GB compressed). From memory, these DDS4 Disks are also known as 120M Disks (120 metre Disks), which is, well, 20/40DB Disks. :)

The other decent alternative I sell is HP, but I find the Sony jobs to be more reliable.

Go check out the HP and Sony websites

Don't forget about the 8mm family like the Exabyte drives. They are also 20 / 40 G

Yes DAT stands for Digital Audio Tape and DLT stands for Digital Linear Tape.

? This Article The Hows and Whens of Tape Backups may be of further interset.

You haven't been very specific in your request.
1) Do you want details of drives. (ie: Helical spin on the read/write heads, transfer speeds, interfacing, etc..)
2) Backup Management software like ArcServe or Veritas?
3) Information specific to Novell and it's built in backup software or philosophies (if any exist)
4) Historical data on Drives? (ie: Technological progression)
5) Historical data on trends? (ie: Amount of data backed up for a corporation of size x over the past 20 years)
6) Information on offsite vs. onsite storage? (ie: Iron Mountain)
