Need ISP suggestions - Can I do this?

In January I'm moving in to a friend's basement apartment. He has cable and I have DSL, but we are wondering if there is some way we can get a much better dedicated connection for about the same combined price ($110-$120) that we can split. I've been getting pretty shoddy service from my provider lately.

Does anyone have any recommendations? We aren't really looking to save any money, just to get a better shared service than what we are currently getting separately. I don't even know where to begin looking.



PS: I would have posted this in the networking forum, but we already have all of the networking equipment and it is all functioning properly. 😉

It doesn't look like FTTP is availible everywhere. What ISPs offer it and how can I find out if I can get it?

you could probably get more upload bandwidth with a bigger DSl account, but you will lose a big amount of download bandwidth. My road runner gives me nearly 3Mbps down, but only 384Kbps up. for $100-120 you may be able to get something like 768/768.

So is FTTP the only option? Nobobdy but Verizon offers fast internet to the home? I find that hard to believe.

We would mostly be interested in a decent download speed. We really want both to increase proportionately. Also, it really doesn't do us any good to get a cable connection with twice the badwidth and then share it. That is basically what we already have. I really want to get something that is a little more reliable that what I've currently got. That may be as simple as switching ISPs or it could be going with an entirely different technology.

Define faster? A friend of mine pays $50-ish a month for 768/768 DSL with TDS Metro. That also includes phone service.

Not so much faster as more reliable. (But fater is good too. 😉) My ISP has been droping the connection lately and it is a rare day that I see anything near the advertised speeds. This FTTP deal looks perfect, but isn't availible in my area. It looks like it will be a while before it is. We are hoping that by pooling our resources we can find something similar. Does Verizon have any competitors in this market?

I've thought about it but the price always gets me. I'm currently not motivated enought to subsidize the price with some revenue generating scheme. (hosting, web site, etc.)

Those schemes wouldn't work well anyhow. You'd get sued in no time if you don't have the infrastructure, and a kiddiot with 100 node botnet could take you down in seconds.

Your choices are: Move to somewhere that has fttp, T1, Cable, DSL, wireless. Cable is going to be the fastest, followed by DSL. Wireless could be anywhere in the spectrum. T1 will give you the best stability (if you're smart).
