Need Internet Connection Monitoring Tool

essential

Senior member
Setup: Verizon DSL through a Linksys wireless router, built in WiFi card to Sony VGN-FW190 laptop.

Basically, when I go to sleep I leave my laptop on with open programs such as AIM all night. However, when I wake in the morning, I?ve lost my connection to most of the open programs. I set my WiFi card in my laptop not to turn off to save power, so I?m not sure what else it can be.

I?m looking for a piece of software I can run all the time that monitors drops in the Internet connect, and logs the causes. For example, when I wake up and everything is down, the log will say something along the lines of, ?2:34am Lost Internet Connection from host, no connection re-established until 4:14am? or ?3:15am WiFi card powered off.?

I basically want to know on the computer end when my connection is going down, and where the source of the drop is coming from so maybe I can figure out the problem.

Edit: The machine is set not to go into Stand-by Mode. I have learned in the past this cuts off the Internet connection as well.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

It would seem that your Wi-Fi shuts off after a given period of inactivity. This is perfectly normal.

I went into device manager and unchecked the setting for my WiFi card not to turn off to save power. I'm going to read through those Google links, see if I can find anything. I recently formatted the machine and the issue has come up since format, so it should be a software thing, but I can't figure out where.

Thanks.
